Dipropanoylmorphine

Has anyone tested this compound? According to Wikipedia, more potent and longer lasting than diacetylmorphine. Given the relative ease of synthesis and source materials I may have to give it a try.

Edit: And where do you live that you can get Propanoic Acid easily? It says that in the US, quantities more than 1 gram have to be reported. It's a fentanyl precursor. Is it precurser or precursor? I always forget.

Precursor.
It's really not that difficult if you were determined, there are plenty of food additives one can cleave to get propionic acid, and then if you have SOCl2 (or can make it), hurrah, there you go.

I guess I'm not up on my food additives. I can't think of any that you could use. But I can only think of 5 or so, excluding the FD&C numbers (is that the right *&*?)

Pentyl propionate, sodium, calcium and potassium salts. Yeah you're right, that's not too much actually. Still I wouldn't expect propanol to be *too* hard to get, and that's easily oxidized to the carboxylic acid.
Anyway, enough synthesis.

AFAIK dibutanoylmorphine is the most potent of the diester morphines. Diacetylmorphine became the most used because of acetic anhydride being the most common anhydride, i'd expect.

Nah the few references that are available say that dibutanoylmorphine is less potent than either the dipropanoyl or diacetyl esters.

Also with both the butanoyl and propanoyl esters the onset of effects is slower than the diacetyl, so probably the longer ester hydrolyses more slowly.

Nicomorphine (the dinicotinate ester) on the other hand seems to be more potent than diacetylmorphine and supposedly is the superior drug, for medical analgesia at least. Also it appears to be orally active seeing as its sold in tablet form, although then again tablets of diacetylmorphine were also sold when it first came out.

I could be wrong, but I thought it was weaker than diacetylmorphine, and that diformylmorphine was much stronger. I'm away from my Beilstein source, but I know that the series was prepared, tested and reported decades ago.

If you had propionyl chloride, why would you bother with sodium propionate? Propionyl chloride plus an alcohol will yield your ester in a single shot.

The sodium proprioate would be used to make the proprionyl chloride... not actually used in the reaction with morphine. Proprionyl chloride would be much more difficult to aquire than sodium proprionate.

Propionic Anhydride is a List I Suspicious Substance, but propionic/propanoic acid is not. You can make fentanyl with propionic anhydride or propionyl chloride as well as amphetamine or cathinone, but not with just the acid unless you can covert it to the anhydride.

List I Substances require reporting to the DEA in any amount, but List II Substances like Acetic Anhydride or ether only need to be reported in 55 gallons or more.

Ham-milton, I have also wondered what your avatar is as it looks a lot like a 2,3 quinazolinone, but it, I cannot figure out what is coming off the 1 Nitrogen? Is it an allyl group? I have tried a few of these compounds myself, and it seemed to me the best was the 2,3 quinazolinone with a fluorine coming off the C-2 instead of a methyl group. I called it mefloqualone because there was a mecloqualone with a chlorine at C-2. I never tried any derivatives with anything coming off of the N-1 though. Have you tried this?

Yes, I have to admit, Iwas a little confused by the phrasing of "propanyl chloride and sodium propanoate" further up in the post, which I took as an implication of synthesizing propionic anhydride, which is obviously not necessary. My mistake.
