Did you know.....?

Did ya know, that a 2012 Gallup poll found that 48% of American adults agreed that 'God created human beings pretty much in their present form within the last 10,000 years or so'; 32% thought that 'Human beings developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God guided this process; 15% believed that 'Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life and God had no part in this process. Presumably, the remaining 5% were not capable of independent thought and were probably members of the NRA..=D

(I added the last sentence, but the rest of the paragraph is allegedly true... :?)

Did you know that a poll, this year, found that 25% of Americans think the sun revolves around the earth?

I thought Solaris was a top notch movie, kinda fucked up though. Stalker sounds interesting, will have to watch that some day.

The shockwave of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, moved Japan (Honshu, the main island) by 2.5m & caused the Earth to tilt ~17cm further on it's axis, shortening the length of a day by 1.8μs.

Noice one, Chat. I dimly recall hearing that at the time. The shortening of the day aspect is particularly impressive. That's quite the big bang 8o

Not much leaps to mind but did see a (crap) documentary on London last night which reminded me that - contrary to popular belief - the world's first underground train system was not begun in London but in New York.

WOW.... I never knew that.... How'd you find that out? :D

"WOW" may be a slight overstatement (unless you're a trainspotter I suppose) but via the medium of a documentary about what exists under various cities and stuff in general. This would be the one about what's under New York. Was quite an interesting series I thought but can't recall the name off the top of my head. Mentioned it in the Documentary Thread... Cities of the Underground? Something like that anyway.

It was an experimental thing done years before London went and created a more fully-fledged system. Was just the one track going between two stations from memory - long since closed and mostly forgotten. Was technically the first underground railway sytem in the world all the same. Just a rather small one. Was actually several interesting things about the NY underground system. They got up to all sorts down there in prohibition times... unsurprisingly.

Really? 8o That does come as a bit of a surprise considering the awfullness of some conditions some people are stricken with. Not meaning to trivialise anorexia, its just something i know very little about.

Yeah - Scary isn't it. Highest suicide rate :( (from my understanding - no bear your full of shit posts). You would think that alzheimer would be the number one (I did) but they don't know the here and now so will live each day in a loop.

I'm not surprised at all. I mean, anorexia's major symptom (not getting proper nutrition, or any nutrition) is kinda immediately life-threatening, whereas deaths associated with other mental illnesses are almost invariably suicides.

Maybe it's because fewer people recognise it as a 'mental illness'. I dunno. Also, take into account that most of the people who suffer from it badly enough to be diagnosed are in a very bad way to begin with. There are millions more out there with less severe eating disorders who either manage to survive or never get diagnosed, so the death rate among those who are diagnosed will be artificially high.

Maybe that and because the media dont mention it all that much, or not that i've noticed anyway, plenty of fat people slapped in our faces but not much of a mention of anorexia
