Hi,
Just been prescribed diazepam by the doctor to take 5mg every 12 hours,
I know it's addictive and has pretty bad withdrawals but 5mg a day is pretty low dose so is there a chance of this happening on such a low dose?
It's perfect to keep my head and thought on track as that's why he gave them me,
But my social anxiety is still pretty bad so shall I go back and report this to him?
As I went for Generalized anxiety disorder
Cheers Rob;)

well,it always starts that way.
then 5 turns to 10,10 to 20 because of TOLERANCE.
I assume you're an addict since you're posting here.

this happened to me,it certainly might not happen to you.
you can live the rest of your life on 5 mg.
all I'm saying is,keep the addiction part in the back of your mind.

good luck,bro.
I take diazepam too.

I'm not an addict, I've took it twice, I only got it 3 days ago lol,
I want to know what short term use means,
Like 1 week or 2 months
And what heavy long term use is that gives bad withdrawals, and can 5mg no more no less give withdrawals?
Cheers rob

short term:1 or 2 weeks=no problem
5mg diazepam for a year=should be fine.some withdrawals,not too much.

dont worry and take it as prescribed.

youll be fine, dont eve need to take it every 12 hours unless its required, maybe save them for later when really necessary or you're having a nervy day.

I think regular low dose use is more likely to result in addiction -> withdrawals than taking a bigger dose every now and then.

If you don't want to be on them forever or don't want to have to face really bad withdrawals then stay at that dose and get off of it in no more than 3 months. I was prescribed benzos for 8 years and didn't miss dosing more than a handful of times during that period, and if I could do it over again I would have only taken it in extreme situations, or if taken daily I would stop after 3 months.

You will get rebound anxiety if you stop, which will make you think you need it more than you do. The bottom line is that at some point you will have to learn how to deal with the anxiety rather than just taking a pill. You can put off doing that by taking pills, but that's just prolonging the inevitable and will make it worse if you use for a prolonged period of time.

If you are functional and just have anxiety then ditch the benzos. I got on them because I was convinced I was going to die, was up reading psychology books thinking all these things were wrong with me, hadn't slept a wink in a few nights, and was regularly driving myself to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack and would pace around outside figuring I would be right there if I collapsed. IMO benzos should be reserved for extreme cases like that.

Not much withdrawals after a year? I would say that about a month, but after a year you would have to do a long taper or go to a detox to get off of it. I would say that 3 months at that dose is the longest he could go without having really bad withdrawals, but should still taper a bit at that dose to prevent bad withdrawals or a seizure.

My body was physically addicted to .5mg of clonazepam after only 3 weeks... and man was I fucking hurting for a lot longer than 3 weeks after that happened, as sometimes benzo withdrawal lasts longer than the actual time you were on the drug. I'm with Tommyboy... I wish I was given a short acting benzo and took it as needed rather than being on a long halflife benzo everyday....

yeah been on he valium train for 3 years. Started at 50mg/day now 2 years later im only down to 27.5. now were talking about PAWS in therapy....just great.

I just wanted to mention something...please dont assume that everyone that comes here is an addict. Many people come here to get safety information for just occasional recreational use. Some people who are here (and I know personally that there are several) that do not use drugs at all but come here for other reason.

As long as you follow the recommended dosage by your doctor / on the bottle. You should be fine.
If you abuse your meds, you're going to pay for it. Simple as that.
If you're taking 5mg for a prolonged period of time (4+ months) then you will probably develop minor withdrawal symptoms if you are deprived of diazepam - Which shouldn't happen at all unless you've been abusing it.

I know it's anecdotal evidence, but I was on 45mgs of temezepam and 1.5mgs of alprazolam daily(read: 24hrs/day), and had no difficulties with a discontinuation syndrome, as I never abused those meds.

Partially, it's up to personal biology and luck of the draw as to whether or not you'll become physically addicted, and up to your mind and circumstances as to whether you'll become mentally addicted, which are two different things completely. Even then, if a med improves the quality of your life to a certain extent it's worth the risk.

Just watch your behaviour, be honest with your doctor per your dosing and needs, and you really should be ok.

Best of luck!
