Bans on whole classes of substances should be adopted to curb rapid spread of designer drugs, report says

The development of designer drugs is escalating so fast that national governments need to adopt generic bans on new substances, the UN's drug agency has urged.

The International Narcotics Control Board reports that illicit opium production in Afghanistan halved during last year to 3,600 tonnes – due to a fungus affecting the poppy plants, rather than efforts of American or British troops.

The impact on heroin supplies in Britain and western Europe will be small because existing opium stocks total about 12,000 tonnes, equal to 2.5 years' worth of global demand.

The board's annual report, published on Wednesday, confirms that cocaine use is continuing to rise in Britain, where it has replaced amphetamines and ecstasy in popularity. Britain is increasingly being used as a gateway to Europe by cocaine smugglers alongside more traditional routes through Spain and the Netherlands.

The Vienna-based drugs agency also highlights the disparity in access to legal pain relief drugs in the developing and developed worlds. "Ninety per cent of the licit drugs are consumed by 10% of the world's population in the USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and some European countries," said Hamid Ghodse, the board's president.

Have to laugh at the fact they don't even give any reason or justification for such a ban…

Have to laugh at the fact they don't even give any reason or justification for such a ban…

no lawmaker would think to even ask for such a justification; the blanket justification "Taking drugs is bad" is implied. Objection to this point of view is preemptively rendered illegitimate and insincere: "They are not actually speaking: the chemicals are speaking through them." The very act of taking a drug goes hand in hand with a wholesale surrender of an individual's agency. This is why many Americans with drug convictions are no longer allowed to vote.

The mechanism works exceedingly well for the International Police Church, which tithes and fattens itself on the perfectly human and primordial urge to unite with one's environment by eating one's environment, as Christians unite with their Christ by eating his flesh and drinking his blood.

But the board wants countries to go further and adopt American-style legislation imposing generic bans to control entire groups of such substances.

Analogue laws are very expensive to enforce. Perhaps the immediate future involves banning entire classes of chemicals by pharmaceutical action, such as the nascent laws and legislative actions that proscribe all cannabinoid receptor agonists. In the long run, these too will be difficult to enforce, as mother nature is a felicitous whore and has guided our development in such a way so as to be able to harness psychoactivity from a dizzying array of sources.

The upshot is that individuals who are ensnared in this net will be cowed into pleading guilty to lesser charges even though they were not guilty of the more severe charges.

Interesting analogies :)

A shame a world body uses such an outdated loaded term for substances such as "designer". As if chemistry was some form of fashion tailoring.

If they can carry taboo from one slew of different shit to the next, oh you know they will!
