But in the former case you need a route that will provide a benzylic nitrile, in the latter case either the bare hydroxyl or POSSIBLY you form the ester BEFORE building the scaffold.

Lots of potential routes but you need to apply retrosynthetic stratergy to figure out what commercially available precursors are out there. A few days work for someone...
