I was wondering where different people draw the line between dependence and addiction. For instance, I wouldn't consider someone who takes 4mg xanax daily for severe panic disorder to be a drug addict. On the other hand, I think everyone would agree that taking 100mg of Adderall daily to "treat" mild ADD is an addiction. What about someone who goes to rehab for heroin and winds up on methadone maintenance for life? Would you consider them an addict or simply dependent? Does it make a difference?

Benzos including xanax are not addicting but you become severely physically dependent.. in order for something to be addicting it has to manipulate dopamine, the limbic systems dopamine reward pathway has a built in mechanism called tolerance.. meaning you will have to take more of a substance (or anything that creates pleasure, shopping, Blue light, sex.. ect) to get the initial high.. along with a decrease in pleasure from the substance come an increase in desire.. so when you become addicted to a substance you do it compulsively, receive less and less high, and crave or want it more and more.. Benzos manipulate the gaba and don't touch the dopamine.. hope this is helpful. bezos hell to get off and no craving after acute withdraw=dependent
