What defines us? Is it our families, parents, grandparents? The way we act? The way we speak? Or is it how we think and feel? We try to define each other by how we look, without actually seeing anything. Can we define ourselves, or are we forced to have others do it forever? Define yourself. Not by how you look, what your last name is, or what job you do. Define yourself by who you think you really are. Have that definition in your head, write it down, whatever. Know it when someone tries to define you. If their definition matches yours, perhaps consider them someone worthwhile to love. Don’t let anyone tell you your definition of yourself is wrong if it doesn’t match his or hers of you. If you don’t like your own definition of yourself, change it, but only for your reasons and only in the ways you want. Don’t lie to yourself about it, don’t tell anybody unless you want to, and don’t feel ashamed about it. Don’t define others, unless you really know them, really care about them, and can handle losing them. Don’t let other’s definitions of you govern how you feel about them, or yours govern how they feel about you. The way you feel is completely up to you, but sometimes you can’t control it. Let others go, but more importantly, let yourself go occasionally. True freedom is freedom from yourself and your own expectations, not anyone else’s.
