Decrease level of a drug (methadone) in system/plasma levels?

So I read that ingesting some baking soda would make drugs stay longer in your system.

Would something acidic have the opposite effect - drugs getting out of your system faster / lower levels in plasma faster?

If so - what acidic product would work?

Thanks in advance!

Which drug are you talking about? It seems like you are talking about amphetamine (baking soda is a well known way to increase amphetamine's affect).

Theoretically, lowering the pH of urine should aid in the excretion of amphetamine. I believe cranberry juice has been shown to lower urinary pH. I don't know if it would cause a noticeable affect in duration though.

Im thinking about drugs like methadone, morphine. If acidic things make them stay less time and thus lowering the blood plasma levels of the drug?

I'm pretty certain that baking soda only reacts with two classes of drugs (to my knowledge): amphetamines and opiates, and that, as you said, increases blood/plasma levels of those drugs.

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) does slow the rate of excretion of amphetamines, but it does not do the same for opiates. It does, however, aid in absorption where orally ingested opiates are concerned.

Vitamin C, etc. will help amphetamines to be excreted faster.

Inducing the liver enzymes responsible for the metabolism of a given opiate will cause it to be excreted faster.

Sorry for posting a double but I totally missed this post.

What do you mean by the statement I made bold ?
Are you saying baking soda would potentiate opiates taken orally or decrease the effect of opiates taken orally ?

Hi Delee,

Methadone is metabolized in the liver. The time to remove it is quite variable depending on genetic variability and other external factors. The wikipedia article section covers it.

In order to increase metabolism (note that we don't allow drug testing questions) you need to enhance the function of enzymes in your liver. The information to do so can be found in this thread.
Awesome CYP-450 Chart!

The whole citric food or baking soda aspect only applies to absorption which is before the methadone enters your blood stream.

edit:
Well actually some compounds found in grapefruit can inhibit enzymes but you don't want inhibition in this case.

Orally ingested opiates are more easily absorbed in an alkaline environment. Baking soda isn't going to "potentiate" orally ingested opiates - it's going to alkalize your stomach, creating an environment in which opiates are more easily absorbed. Think of it as increasing bioavailability. This is a good thing.
