Dead Body, Cancerous Lungs to Appear on U.S. Cigarette Packs, FDA Decides

Those pics seem so soft and cuddly.

In Australia it looks like a kill bill movie, blood everywhere, bile and shit, surgeons ripping out someone's lungs or hacksawing off a gangrenous leg. Brutal shit I tell ya. Don't know if it works though. I'd be surprised if I met any one excluding the old generation who didn't know smoking was bad for you.

Tobacco firms sue FDA over new graphic labels

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Four of the five largest U.S. tobacco companies are suing the federal government over new graphic cigarette labels that include the sewn-up corpse of a smoker and a picture of diseased lungs.

The companies say the warning labels violate their free speech rights by requiring them to carry a government-sponsored emotionally charged appeal to not use their legal products. They want the labels stopped.

As a smoker, this bothers me.
Its not like people dont understand smoking is bad anymore, smoking is on the decline i thought compared to in the past.
these labels are overkill, everyone KNOWS how bad smoking is, and the surgeon general's warnings on every pack of cigarettes make it clear that tobacco products are addictive and harmful to your health
what about smokeless tobacco products, they dont have to have anything like this? It seemed that in high school, and i just graduated so i figure this is probably true everywhere, a hell of a lot more kids dip than smoke, cause i used to dip, lots of kids do that, i'd be more worried about kids dipping than smoking...
I think these labels are gonna have no effect, not a measurable one anyway...because the people who will be swayed by this aren't even old enough to smoke, or anywhere near 18 i'd think..
it wouldn't have made a difference to me.
The tobacco companies aren't the scumbags they're portrayed as IMO, while yes they do sell products that kill, and they did try to downplay the negative effects of smoking, but the alcohol industry never gets any criticism when their products if consumed in excess are worse than smoking, cause more problems in society than tobacco does, yet they can advertise hard liquor on TV and make drinking look cool.
My only problem with the tobacco companies atm is that I'm not 21 so i'm not old enough to get free shit from marlboro...cause if i'm old enough to buy your fucking cigarettes i'm old enough to get free shit for doing so.
i never thought i'd be a smoker even when i started smoking pot...aren't those labels misleading in the sense of, tobacco CAN and MAY cause cancer, but smoking doesn't cause lung cancer in absolutely everyone who smokes.
saying CIGARETTES CAUSE CANCER is misleading, saying they may or can cause cancer is more truthful. it looks like half of these are almost the same words as the surgeon general warnings..

I met some canadian guys at roo. They said their cigarettes cost from 8 to 13$ a pack. That might have an effect also. Where I live, cigs are about 3 to 5$ a pack.

^Touche. I think prices have a lot to do with it. Most of the prices are taxes now. I imagine Canada has some pretty intense taxes, esp. on a vice such as tobacco usage.

Ya, cigs are a huge rip off up here. $10 a pack is the average. Taxing things by multiples of the original price is a way of life up here. A $55 60oz bottle of whisky up here is $15 in Florida; that was a wake up call for me.

I'm just glad I don't smoke much, a $10 pack will last me a couple months so it doesn't affect me much, but of my friends that smoke regularly, cigarettes are a huge expense that takes a lot of money out of their bank accounts.

I always liked getting cheap smokes duty free at the border without the Health Canada mandated images, sucks that's history.

Cigarettes cost even more on the east coast of Canada, like $13/pack for decent ones. Makes me jealous of the prices in the states. The high prices have created a pretty big market for illegal tobacco though lol. The cost is certainly more prohibitive than the images IMO.

I'm lucky or unlucky depending on how you look at it. I'm in the U.S. but also in the south. I'm pissed at having to pull out more than a 5$ bill to pay for cigs. (they've hit almost 5 where I live before tax). When I started a few years ago, I could get a pack for around 4 after tax. When my grandmother quit, she said she quit cause her brand hit 3$ a carton which she considered expensive. So jealous of her lol.

The health and well-being issues were acceptable to her, but not $3/carton? Damn is that ever an anomaly!!

And aside from being unconstitutional, this mandate is just plain wrong. I'm sure the co.'s lawsuit will tie this up for a long time, at least - hopefully it'll go smooth for them and set a solid precedence before we're looking at graphics of liver cirrhosis on our beer bottles.

logic, you're lucky
cigarettes here are 6 bucks for camels marbs or newports, and its 6 bucks and like a dime so you cant even technically get a proper pack for 6 bucks :(
and PA isn't too bad about cigarette taxes either, its a lot worse in maryland for some reason?

Even if the major tobacco companies lost a significant amount of American users as a result of the warnings, which probably won't happen anytime soon, they still have a massive market in China, India, and other heavily populated developing countries. China has as many smokers as people in the U.S., and China doesn't require tobacco companies to put warnings on their products, and it wouldn't surprise me if a bunch of other countries didn't either.

"I hereby declare as head of the FDA that cigarettes packs should be made even more fucking metal... with dead bodies and charred lungs and people breathing smoke on babies and stuff... because that is like fucking awesome."

They wouldn't want to put warnings on their cigs; I bet they view it as a good form of population control.

And you Americans talking about how expensive anything is; your jaws would drop if you had to pay what everything in Canada costs. You have no sympathy from me, I was in FL for a while and thought I'd died and went to tax-free heaven, my living expenses were about half of what they are at home.

What will forever piss me off is how we export far more oil than we consume yet our gas prices are also way higher than those in the states; EVERYTHING costs more here. I guess it has it's upsides though; it's a lot less edgy of a society than down south.

Yeah, we are always kind of on the verge of rioting, but just not quite there. If they tried to raise our taxes to what ya'llz pay we'd probably bust out our pitch forks and torches.

I went to school near Canada, and yes that country is just expensive as hell, but in New York City cigs are now $11-13/pack with tax, and with the all-around high cost of living here, it's actually starting to border on ridiculous. Unlike in situations like NeighborhoodThreat's though, smoking is getting banned more and more places here...now it's not allowed in beaches and parks, so I think graphic images aren't going to do much here --- the prices and general negativity expressed via laws and public opinion here are MUCH stronger forces.

I should quit anyway, and something more graphic than the packages? Losing your mom to lung cancer. Pictures don't do some of that medical stuff any justice, and the pictures are all cartoonish and comical and take away from how serious the health effects can be. My failed attempts at quitting show how addicting the habit can really be, and as I said, those pictures are useless, waste of printing, and don't do it any justice anyway. I think financial and social restrictions are more logical and probably successful in this case, how many of us already use generic everything (OTC included) and buy store brand food? Clearly, dramatic packaging doesn't have the effect on people that it may have at one point.

Also, NYC isn't conveniently near any reservations although many exist throughout the state, but prices have gone up there too. NYC pushed out the Native Americans a bit too much, I think. [FYI to those not familiar, Native Americans don't have to tax the shit out of their cigs or gas in the US, New York State has been trying to push this in recent times but still no tax, although prices went up significantly.]

I bet the cig companies are hating this, then again, I wish they would legalized weed & do the same thing, do you really think it will stop people from smoking?

Cool, is there going to be pictures of rotten livers and fatal car accidents on bottles of booze? Those could be like collectors items really. =D
