Things are hotting up for the 7th Community Smoke-in in Darwin’s Raintree Park this weekend. This smoke-in is expected to be the biggest so far with the theme “Oppose the War on Iraq” as well as the usual theme “Oppose the drug laws.” As usual, the event will include a free lunch, music, speakers, an open mike and activities for the children.
This smoke-in will also be particularly important, as the Darwin City Council have refused a permit for the event. NAP members and supporters have met with Council and have made numerous written submissions, all to no avail.
Council offered NAP members the option of meeting in Civic Park, however, there are major concerns that Police would attack NAP members at Civic Park as there would be a much smaller number of witnesses present than in Raintree Park.
NAP’s concerns about Police behaviour are based on 2 brutal attacks by NT Police on peaceful protesters. The most recent of these was the last smoke-in, held on the 12th of October http://www.napnt.org/pages/Articles_28.htm
This was smoke-in number 6. NT Police also attacked peaceful protesters at the 1st Community Smoke-in. The Coordinators of NAP (Gary Meyerhoff) and PARIAH (Mick Lambe) were arrested and charged with assault police, loitering and other offences. http://www.napnt.org/pages/Articles_1.htm#art1
The prosecution has recently dropped all charges in this matter and an investigation is being conducted by the NT Ombudsman. Police Minister Syd Stirling was stood down from his position within days of the 2nd police attack.
Since the commencement of the NAP campaign against the police state and the “war on drugs”, 14 NAP activists have been charged with over 70 offences, a number of which carry gaol sentences. They need your support. One simple way that you can support the NAP activists is by coming along to the smoke-in and by promoting it to your friends and workmates.
Remember, we have strength in numbers, so the more people we have in Raintree Park, the higher the likelihood that we can have a fun, relaxed and peaceful afternoon. Maybe the Police will have better things to do with their time than assault peaceful protesters?
When: Saturday, 9th November, 12 noon (try and be early)
Where: Raintree Park, opposite old Woolies in Darwin City
