“Dartboard Eyes”

(Reed Rosson)

Lucky-striking dartboard eyes
I got a Friday fever with yellow signs
Red flags on walls are no surprise
Happy Hour foam cheap on-tap off-time...

Sting my ears ringing
Half-cutting my size bringing
me down bulls-eyeball all-stars
don’t take me for granted no more

I’m a heavyweight champion
with hard starry dartboard eyes
Girl I could show you something
you never thought you’d ever try

In the bar—or meet me on the fly
when streaming-colored darts hit-split the bullseye
We’re singing along to oldies bebop
on the jukebox and you compliment
suddenly my spiffy clothes and silly moptop

I ain’t searchin anymore for you, girl
I see you winning
while you're only losing in your successful world
with my black-n-red dartboard eyes
long past thru your heartbreak lies
which harshly tickle though I can’t cry
I try to

Dartboardize my life
Tiny holes pricked into my mind
Timed, peaceful laughter no longer near
with these spinning-wheel-like eyes crossed
then closed seeing both cheer and fear
then

Penetrating lust
in a good old game of darts
spilling stale beer and wine
Smack down on the table a Queen of hearts
Baby, I won’t let you win this time
