I am not certain whether this is the proper area in which to post this issue, but I thought I would give it a shot. This could very well be a bogus hoax, but it concerned me as I post occasionally on Pillreports.com and include pictures of pills. I read this recently:
"just a tip..... my friend used my scanner to scan some pills he had gotten for himself, and now its being used as evidence against me to put me away saying i'm a drug dealer! Cops patrole (sic) these boards and trace IP addresses of people that post pics here... be careful!"
Is it possible to use IP addresses to trace someone and charge them with possession or dealing?
Does anyone know if this has actually occurred?
Feel free to move this post to a more appropriate area (if there is one), but I thought I would start here due to the search and seizure implications of the question.

Sounds like a joke to me. You need more than photographs to be charged with possession, especially photographs posted on the internet. With that said, you need to take care when posting anything that says "I HAVE DRUGS" or "I SCORED LOTS OF PILLS. Unneccessarily claming you HAVE drugs, while not in itself illegal, might not be the smartest move.

People who've posted on Bluelight have been raided by the police because of their posts on Bluelight. That's an absolute fact (it happened in Australia). It's certainly possible that cops are monitoring pillreports, and could track you (through IP address, email etc). Do not post about having loads of pills on you, do not post that you are going to buy pills. Be careful, basically.
I agree, just photos of pills could hardly be enough to get you charged - but it could certainly be enough to get you raided.

Pics alone wouldn't amount to probable cause for arrest, and certainly not enough to get a conviction. HOWEVER, assuming the DA could get past the hearsay problem, they might be admissable as evidence to support a conviction or get a warrant, but by themselves pictures wouldn't cut it.
Using IP addresses is tricky, they have a problem with identification. Basically they have to prove WHO used the computer, not just which computer.

Cops can certainly monitor at pillreports, ie. see what you see.
There is a strict no e-mail address or personal information rule on pillreports.com.
We have never been asked to hand over any information on our users (e-mail / ip address).
So the tracking element is nonsense, its not to say it couldn't happen in the future (ie. police requesting information), but up till now it has not happened.
The only way that the scanner could incriminate someone is if the computer is full of pictures of scanned pills, although it would be difficult for them to prove that these pictures where not just downloaded from the internet.
I call shananigans on this thread.

Good to hear some reassurance from the man in charge :)
As I said in my original post, that comment I read seemed extremely fishy, but I decided to look for feedback as I have become more paranoid about internet security (given the new governmental powers under the Homeland Security legislation).
Thanks for all the hard work on the site - it's absolutely indispensable for me and I intend to keep posting my reports :)
:)

Where did you read that btw?
It just struck me that the message did not actually mention pillreports.

It was in a comment to a report on the Pillreports site. Sorry for the confusion, thanks again for all your efforts.

Right, I've spent an hour researching that particular posting.
In summary:
There was NO IP TRACING.
This person WAS NOT caught as a result of using pillreports or any other drug site.
This person WAS BUSTED for dealing, by the age old method of being narced by a friend.
This person STILL POSTS on both bluelight and pillreports. Despite warning against doing this.
The facts as presented in the pillreports posting, differ from the posting on the main bluelight site.
Perhaps this person will notice this thread and make some comment and explain things properly.

Jase: duh, good point about the IP and email. My bad. I don't really read pillreports so I wasn't thinking. The situation did definitely arise on Aus Bluelight though - I talked to Jake about it when I was over there a month or so ago.
Just to get this right in my head: is there no way for law enforcement to track IPs without access to the BL server?

It should be noted that the busts in Australia from pill reports happened when the cunts(oops, cops) got search warrants on the homes of people who had their REAL NAME AND EMAIL visible to other users. IT is always advisable to use a fake name and a spam email to open your bluelight account
