Dance Like Nobody Is Watching? Fact or Fiction?

Theres only one place ive ever been to that ive actually felt comfortable to dance like no ones watching: Club 77 (sydney club on william st) unfortunatly a change of music policy saw well established club nites - tweakin (fri nite) and zukini (sat nite) getting shut down 
not many people Ive met had the chance to experience wot a great place that was, good music good crowd, and if it wasnt a regular club nite, i would of sworn id come to the rave..even more so than the old subbies
I normally watch people sometimes for ideas on new moves, copy but encorprate into my own style

i really, reaLLY, REALLY love to dance - it is one of my most favourite things in the world, along with music. and like tarsy said, i'm not adverse to jumping onto an empty dancefloor..... i don't really mind if people are watching me, i watch other people and like others have said, it's more to appreciate or even try out some of their moves and incorporate them into your own style.
the other weekend if was out and was dancing non-stop for two hours (damn tipper, so damn good) and i got a few compliments on my dancing (absolutely makes my night it does) but it kinda points to the fact that people must be watching me dance!
however, i love it when they turn off most of the lights and you're dancing in pretty much darkness coz then it's definitely not about how cool you look but the pure enjoyment of experiencing your body moving through space

I get ruled by the music.... if the music sucks then i can be found milling around, talking crap or general tom foolery, otherwise... if the music is going off... i go off and what ever that may entail... be it standing there, with my head in the stars, just barely being able to move sort because of the state the music has put me in (prime example ferry corsten, i couldnt dance at some points, but then it would be followed by eyes closed, hands up in the air, frantic lim flaying everywhere), but yeah basically if the music is going off, i do and whatever those repercussions are, it sounds silly, but i dont pay too much attention to my dancing.. i just do what the music tells me to.. same way if i cant get into the music... then you'll find i cant dance for crap.. i just end up looking a mong
One question I have is this..
There seems to me to be two sorts of dancing.
1. Where you just jump up and down, kind of hopping along waving your arms about. It's not very intricate or complex, but it's energetic and you can just go nuts and lose yourself. You can dance like this non-stop for a long time without losing tempo or becoming too exhausted.
2. Where you stand in the same spot and do all the intricate footwork and fancy steps, spinning occasionally and generally looking like you've been practising and know what the hell youre doing. I tend to see this kind of dancing more towards the end of the night, when the crowd on the floor has thinned out a bit. Pple dancing this way tend not to be able to keep it up for long periods and perform in short spurts interspaced with standing around waiting for the music to get to the right spot and sipping from a water bottle.
My question is this, Do people who do no.2 look down on those who do no.1? I like to no.1 (I dont know how to no.2 although Id like to learn), but sometimes I wonder whether people no.2 pple just think Im a clueless idiot. Like Id spent most of the night with this girl who was a no.2 dancer whom I didn't know very well at Hard Kandy, and she was reluctant to dance, but I dragged her out anyway and said something like "come on, just have fun with the music", and she responded, "well yeah I could always just hop around like you do", in a somewhat accusatory and what I perceived to be a belittling voice.
This saddened me a little bit, because although I no.1 I don't look like a retard doing it, Im just having fun the only way I know how. Now I wonder whether pple who no.2 just look at me and think Im some sort of tryhard moron .
Personally I think that people should just enjoy themselves and enjoy OTHERS enjoying themselves on the dancefloor. Raving for me is about being totally uninhibited in a friendly loving atmosphere.
I hope I'm not kidding myself :/

i've been told by some ppl. that i look 'quite OK' when i just go sick (usually i look better when i'm peakin tho... lol)... i'm sure it has a lot to do with just feeling the music.

Checkit: I'm kinda inbetween 1 and 2, I don't just jump around, I do the Melbourne Shuffle, but there are a few bounces and jumps thrown in... Less spins now than in the past... If the there's a really good track playing I'll increase the pace, take up more room, generally put more effort in... Otherwise I'll just shuffle happily conserving energy...
...Or sit down and bop away...
And I don't care what other people want to do... Mr Samadhi is a definite chair bopper, but oh what a funky chair bopper he is!!!
With me, i don't have practised moves, have a set style of dancing, or look at other people dance moves because i don't move to music...the music tends to move me...it all becomes subconscious...like phase dancer and Tabernacle stated, the groove changes as the night progresses...it's a real journey for me
I'm generally at doofs, so there is a certain atmosphere too, lots of accoustic percussion, it becomes very primal and tribal. When i'm REALLY getting into it, I don't think about anything else.

Yep, in my opinion that is basically the only thing that can make someone's dancing look bad!
Dancing should be a "feeling" in response to the music, not a rehearsed routine.
I always think that the people who show off the most must have some insecurities or something, because they are obviously doing it for others attention, and focussing on how others perceive them, rather than "letting go" for their own pleasure... ahha a conclusion to my rambling - being able to dance like no one is watching is much more rewarding than dancing when you know people are watching!
And Checkit, keep dancing like a doofus, that's way less tryhard than being a No.2

I love to dance as alot of us BL'ers do and i don't mind if people a watching.. It's there comments that can make a difference..
I think the party was Fusion and i was dancing next to a group of girls.. For no reason apart from the fact that there was space next to them for me to go a little crazy.. Anyways, I noteced them looking at me so i stoped and asked them was i dancing to close to them.. They told me no and they were just watching me dance coz they thought i was good and going off (now that is a fact or fiction topic, is acell any good at dancing
) back to the story.. Once they told me that i danced like crazy.. Then looking back at them i noticed one of them.. They stuck out like you wouldn't beleive but i couldn't figure out why.. I went up to her and said, "i know you from somewhere".. Her friend looked at me and said, "No you don't". Well.. I left it for a couple of seconds why i tryed to figure out if it was all in my head (if you know what i mean.. *wink* *wink*) but i knew her from somwehere.. I turned back and said yeah i know you and it clicked! It was a chick from Neighburs!! I'm not going to say wich one.. But dam she was LOVING it.. off her face.. And loving my dancing.. So as you can imagine i danced so well after i realised that i got a complement from a Salebraty!! WOO HOO..
and that's my story

i think the phrase is somthing that most ppl want to acheive, but many are too self consious.
i usually dance like am idiot but absolutly love it, somtimes i even try to dance like an unco to get a few laughs. i dunno it depends how i feel.
the reason for dancing like an idiot is probably cause i can't do "the moves" for shit!

The trick to dancing like no-one is watching = VISOR / CAP *TA DA*
It really works! I find I'm off in my own world when I wear a cap because you don't see anyone else's eyes unless you make a conscious effot to look up.
My other trick is not to wear glasses, then you can't really see anything let alone anyone......sometimes it's nice to go through life with a soft focus on things!
I have to admit though that I do love to watch people dance, I can watch good dancers for hours. Whether it's a hypnotically amazing dancer or a somewhat un-co swayer - I'm yet to see someone who hasn't got something that I like.
For me there is nothing better than seeing someone who might not necessarily be the best dancer in the world, absolutely cuttin'sick because their having such an awesome time.
That makes me smile. That my friends is what it's all about *big grins*
....and remember if it all seems too hard - you're not using enough talc *wink*

That is just so true. The best sight you'll ever see is someone who's totally new to the scene on their first pill absolutely carving it up on the dance floor without the slightest care in the world. Even if they can't dance for shit I just feel so happy because I can see that they're so happy

I get stomach cramps sometimes when I dance. As much as I'd like to be superman and keep dancing sometime, it's just not possible. So I stop and just stand there. I'd like to think people didn't jump to conclusions and assume something about me based on my simply standing there, but it apears that that doesn't happen...

as for people with rehearsed moves and such.. i dont think thats as much for showing off as it is for utilising skills and talent.
yeah im sure there are full wankers out there who practice moves purely for showing off in clubs, but those tight, funky as shit groovers you see toward the end of the evening just take dancing further than having fun. they turn it into an arform, a science. yeah maybe they do practice their moves at home and shit. but its coz they love it, not because they want *you* to see it.
but yeah you can always pick the wankers and the artists yourself anyways.

Now I dance inspite of people watching, and if I notice someone making eye contact and i'm feeling adventerous, I might do something fancy for them.
So basically, sometimes the idea of showing off can help me have fun and sometimes the knowledge that people watch simply gets ignored.
In terms of watching other people and judging them... Of course i do - I actually look at the people who do the previously defined no. 2 type dancing and think how crap it is.
This, however, is not because I dislike the person at all. Just because I can't understand how you can enjoy doing one move over and over and over again. I do understand that dancing is about fun and if that gives them pleasure than great... I don't judge them, I merely judge there dancing in terms of what I like doing.
