After doing a quick google search for "why does dairy produce phlegm," the results were like "does dairy produce phlegm? ...Studies show no."

What!? That's bullshit! At least for me, anyway. Any time I consume dairy, whether it's milk, cheese or yogurt, I get really phlegmy. I'm sure it's not something everyone experiences, but I'm also sure I'm not the only one like this.

Why does dairy produce phlegm like this? Is it the lactose? the fat?

It's sinusy phlegm, by the way. Nose, back of the throat n stuff.

Dairy ALWAYS has caused me to produce more phlegm. If I don't drink it while Im sick I have way less problems. I think our immune systems e may just be sensitive to dairy and not everyone is.

I've always heard that dairy causes phlegm, but not from any reputable sources: The most recent source I heard it from was a music instructor who told all his students not to drink milk or eat any dairy products within 24 hours of a performance.

I know I got wicked bad phlegm when I drank milk.

No reputable sources to back up my two cents though.

Well, there's this: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/phlegm/AN01455

But especially this: http://www.thedairydish.org/2011/11/02/dairy-myth-busters-series-milk-causes-mucus/

which cites this: http://www.jacn.org/content/24/suppl_6/547S.full

"In individuals inoculated with the common cold virus, milk intake was not associated with increased nasal secretions, symptoms of cough, nose symptoms or congestion. Nevertheless, individuals who believe in the mucus and milk theory report more respiratory symptoms after drinking milk."

I only notice the phlegm buildup if I drink more than a pint of whole milk before doing cardiovascular exercise. It starts to build up in the throat and a simple hock relieves me. Otherwise it's not an issue.

I had always heard this "fact" as well and disputed it until it happened to me directly. Dairy = phlegm? Preposterous! :D

This old chestnut!! :)
I can't reference anything, suffice to say that I recall seeing 'research' proving both camps right/wrong, from various sources over time... having said that, my experience is that dairy foods do lead to an increase in mucous build-up, and I usually feel better if I avoid dairy when I have a cold or upper respiratory tract infection.
My Dad waves the flag also... as a small kid (3 or 4yo) I was supposed to get what they call grommets put in my ears, as was my similarly aged sister. Essentially, they are a small drain to assist fluid removal from the Eustachian canal, and they are often prescribed for kids who have chronic ear infections, or persistent glue ear type conditions... anyway... Dad, in his infinite wisdom stopped us from having milk in the afternoon/evenings, and switched us to low fat milk. Within a month, no more chronic ear infections, and no need to get grommets inserted.
Now, I know that's not science, but if I get told that my kids need grommets I know what I'll try first, and it's testament to dairy = increased congestion in the ENT areas.

this is right out of the daoist dietary handbook!

humans arent well adapted to consuming dairy. many of us "can" consume it and make great energy out of it fine. its relatively new to our diets as a species. were the only species that consumes milk into adulthood (heck, beyond infancy unless animals are starving), and the only species that actively seeks out another species' milk.

no human is adapted to consuming pasteurized dairy. this is a brand new technology that has been shown to reduce health in many ways, and even cause weakened offspring, and infertile offspring several generations from the ancestor consumer. its far less nutritious, and strongly impairs the ability for nutrients to be absorbed. it can cause mineral buildup in the joints and connective tissue, or artery walls.

try switching your diet up to raw dairy and see how you react. also consume less dairy in general, minimize it to as few meals a week as you can.

try a stew of job's tears for breakfast in the mornings to rid yourself of phlegm (may take a few weeks of it to totally rid it)

Dairy causes me to get really bad mucus production as well. Especially before a workout. I had a thought a while back though; you always read that no species drink milk into adulthood, and never from another animal. But cats love cow milk. At least all the cats I ever had. So some animals drink it into adulthood, and from another species...Off topic I know...

I'm interested in this and would love to read up on your sources? :)
