At least Louise Mensch is brave enough to say drugs messed with her mind, unlike the sneering liberals who still can't face the truth

The Conservative MP Louise Mensch raised eyebrows last week when she talked candidly on BBC’s Question Time about the effects of having taken hard drugs in her youth. Previously, she had said that claims she had used drugs at a nightclub in Birmingham were ‘highly probable’ and ‘not the only incident of the kind’. On Question Time, however, she admitted having taken Class A drugs — while refusing to say which ones, in order not to ‘glorify’ them — and said these had ‘messed up her head’ and left her with long-term mental health problems.

Yet cocaine may not be as bad as another drug commonly trivialised as a nightclub stimulant. According to Professor Andy Parrott, Britain’s most distinguished expert on Ecstasy, the effects of this drug — quite apart from the fact it has killed people — may be more serious even than those of cocaine.

Professor Parrott has written that long-term effects of Ecstasy include impairment of memory, damage to reasoning ability such as the competence to take decisions or organise complex material, loss of sexual interest and pleasure, sleep disturbance and damage to the immune system.

In a review in 2001 of 15 years of research into Ecstasy, he concluded that many of these ill-effects persisted long after people had stopped using the drug, suggesting that the damage to their brains might well be permanent.

One such report in 2004 reported growing evidence that early and regular marijuana use was associated with increases in depression, suicidal behaviour and psychotic illness, and may bring forward the onset of schizophrenia.

In 2007, the Lancet published an analysis of 35 medical studies, which warned that using cannabis could increase the risk of developing a psychotic illness later in life by more than 40 per cent.

But under this strategy of ‘harm reduction’ — a Trojan horse for legalisation — drug use has rocketed skywards. The legalisers’ arguments are wrong-headed, historically false and often absurd. Saying prohibition doesn’t work, for example, ignores the fact that smuggling, the black market and other crime associated with alcohol did not disappear when it was legalised — nor, indeed, have they done so with tobacco.

The Daily Fail and idiotic political ideals is what is messing with people's (like your's) minds, not drugs.

Drugs don't screw you up. You screw yourself up if you act irresponsibly. This can be with anything in life, absolutely not just with drugs. If you're too afraid to face the fact that you need to take responsibility for your own actions, you should crawl back in to bed and suck your thumb. Those "sneering liberals" are (presumably) the ones who are closer to understand that we have the right to accept personal responsibility for our actions, and not have it shoved down our throat by a nanny state.

LOuise Mensch is hot i'll give her that .

She's also a hardcore Tory Bitch that chose to say that she took class A drugs as is the thing to do these days in POlitics.
After this admission she went on Newsnight & towed the Tory Party line on Drugs really hard thus making her admission seem like a publicity stunt , which is all it was.

Her brain was always messed up. She's a conservative, kind of a prerequisite.

So people who say drugs messed them up are brave and people who say drugs didn't mess them up are cowards? Yeah that makes sense :\

I think this is a good article to put up here, if just because its a different viewpoint than I'm used to seeing here. I, like most blue lighters, personally lean toward the liberal side of politics, but I am all too conscious of our frequent biases. Drugs are here to stay and furthermore most can probably be used safely, but they are very harmful if abused. I personally abused the seemingly harmless drug marijuana and dove helter-skelter into taking pharmaceuticals (never was prescribed a benzo--though I was prescribed ambien and abused the hell out of it--and was only very briefly prescribed a scheduled stimulant, which I never abused), both of which fucked me up hard. This is probably fueling my caution about drugs. Anyways, it can be just as or more harmful to deny a drugs detrimental effect on self as it can be to say it can't be harmless fun if used safely--though after an addiction, its advisable to not go back using the respective drug.

She probably took a bad pill at a party once and got sick. It's obvious she was never seriously addicted to hard drugs, she's just playing it up for attention, and she wouldn't get any if she admitted what actually happened.

Conservatism is very different in the UK to what you call by that name in America, our Conservatives would broadly be considered to be on the left of your political spectrum. Making uninformed partisan personal jabs isn't the best way to conduct political discourse.
