family up there said they got hammered in Tully, shitting themselves in the laundry under mattresses until 9am this morning they said all the windows were smashed and most of their stuff wet inside not far away from houses that got totally ruined either. all night the sound of the storm was apparently like hearing jets constantly fly above their house

wow man, thats insane, glad to hear they all made it through.

I took some google earth screenshots of the eye as it made landfall, here are 3 different zooms, you can clearly see its right over tully

Yep, Tully got absolutely smashed.

lagger, so glad to hear that your family is safe, that's the main thing.

I honestly cannot even begin to imagine what the terror of enduring that cyclone was like. Because it didn't just go over in an hour or even two hours. It was all fucking night :(

Lots of love to everyone up there beginning the clean-up <3

I briefly saw something like that on A Current Affair (I never ever watch that show normally, I swear!! :)), it was some chick standing in front of the waves and getting almost knocked over...same one?
(I'm at work so I can't actually view the video you linked lagger)

This cyclone was some srsly hectic shit, was absolutely crapping myself when it started getting really heavy here in Tville. In true BLer style I shouted myself half a stilnox cos there was no way I wanted to stay awake worrying about my house falling down all night. The sound was incredible, you could hear a massive roar coming from miles away, it would get louder and louder like a jet about to land on your roof then the whole house would start shaking. I wanted to hold onto something but everything was shaking so there was no point.

Still have no power here yet but I'm not missing it too much. Cleaned out the ice machine at work and also scored a generator today (hence this post).

Fortunately there was no damage to my house at all but my back fence is flattened and my paw paw tree fell down. My parent's house in Cardwell tho is going to be a completely different story. Not good at all :\

Already claimed mine! Yet to see it tho. And I think half of it is going to go to my insurance company :\

The Centrelink transfer payment is a good thing, bit of fiscal stimulation so its win-win as far as the Govt is concerned, but good for the people all the same.

How do they substantiate who was without power though and how many days did you need to be out of power to qualify?

I know NickyJ has been out of power for days and has had to resort to petrol power for all of those "devices"

Haha when my house was flooded in the Central Coast/Newcastle floods not only did I and my housemates get a grand each but the guy living temporarily in our garage managed to get it too. No idea how the fuck he managed that...

Unfortunately I lost just over a grand's worth of stuff and a book I liked that is out of print so I wasn't quite laughing all the way to the bank.

I would have thought thought Eggman that it would be pretty easy to substantiate who was without power, surely the electricity company would have just given a report of where lines and shit were down, and areas they weren't supplying power too for safety reasons.

You can be sure though that the government isn't going to waste a lot of time investigating suspicious claims for fears of persecuting a legitimate victim and subsequent 60 minutesque media backlash.

48 hours without power. They apparently have a list of affected areas, but I waited until getting a letter from Energex for my claim (for the floods that is). That wasn't necessary as other people in my apartment complex got the $$$ paid in. There were stories of Centrelink just going by post code, lucky for some as people in my suburb who were without power for 24hrs got the payment.

There are other reasons you can claim for the one off payment, such as being trapped in your house for 24hrs, or not being able to get there for 24 hrs. Also more substantial claim reasons such as damage to your residence, serious injury, losing a loved one etc.

I'm sure that the energy providers can pull a list of affected streets and areas etc but all you can really confirm would be the property owners who have their name on title or tenants under a lease agreement. Since the claimants don't need to be registered for Government assistance surely just about anyone can come up and say "yeah, I live in [name of no power] street".

I'd imagine you would have to produce utilities bills, mobile phone bill etc to substantiate residence and if you can't produce something like that, too bad! Really though, that just takes us back to exactly what you mentioned in the last post.

It couldn't be good PR for a Government agency to pull people across the coals to prove they have been disadvantaged by a natural disaster and just as bad to prosecute people for suspicious claims, even if it is years later.

Either way though, its an expansionary fiscal mechanism. People will spent that money just as quickly as they get it. Most will spend on repairs and cost of living and some will squander it - regardless, they'll shove it back into the economy and not save it - it helps put a floor on any possible downward pressure on GDP.

Anyway, just out of (morbid) curiosity - how much do you get for loss of a loved one? Imagine being the government employee that had to put a dollar figure on that one!

It is the same payment - which in my mind really makes you feel wrong about claiming it if you were only without power for 48hrs (I didn't have power for 5 days but that was because the streets surrounding me were flooded and there was serious damage to the transformers)

Here is the info link for your interest

Wow. Well it's not like you usually get anything, unless it happens at work or they have life insurance.
