Is it possible to take one of the double bonds from the benzene ring in the phenethylamine structure? If so would this effect it's behaviour significantly of amphetamine etc.

It'd make the synthesis a bitch, cyclohexadiene likes to rearrange. And judging from the results of methamphetamine -> propylhexidrine conversion I don't think it's worth it at all.

Guess you could reduce it to the 1,4-cyclohexadiene via birch reduction.

Why on earth would you want to? Cyclohexadienes are excellent Diels-Alder participants and will probably result in all sorts of wierd recombination.

Yes, the 1,5dienes are. 1,4dienes are not (well not unless there is a conjugated diene present). I dont know why on earth he would want to do this. I was just elaborating on whether it was possible or not

If you want that product, you're better synthesizing it through other methods.
