Opioids CWE using saturated NaCl(aq) ?

To isolate codeine, in theory, one could get rid of 100% of Tylenol and caffeine if a saturated salt solution was used. Not sure if it would work in practice but this is how I would do it:

Take a 15mL glass vial, and transfer 4g of powder. Add 10mL of pure water and shake well. Heat the solution to around 50 degrees Celsius (with a lighter) and shake well. Add NaCl until saturation. Allow the solution to cool down to room temperature. Filter&drink.

Not sure if it would do something to the codeine but I know that absolutely no tylenol would be able to dissolve, not even in amounts of 50 ppm (codeine would have no trouble remaining in solution), has anyone tried this? That would also give you 1-2g of salt, I wonder what the daily value is...lol
 
Unfortunately saturation doesnt work this way. Saturating the solution with NaCl does not effect the concentration of acetaminophen in the solution. The acetaminophen itself must be at the saturation point (the usual solubility of acetaminophen being around 14mg/mL.)

I have a related question. If the end result of a CWE is completely clear, does that mean there is no APAP/paracetamol left in there at all?
 
Unfortunately saturation doesnt work this way. Saturating the solution with NaCl does not effect the concentration of acetaminophen in the solution. The acetaminophen itself must be at the saturation point (the usual solubility of acetaminophen being around 14mg/mL.)

Prove it. I think that it is more thermodynamically favorable for the water molecules to disociate the Na+ Cl- ions instead of surrounding the paracetamol, rather apolar molecule. The water molecules around the paracetamol would move towards the NaCl crystals, thus precipitating the paracetamol and dissociating the salt.

Yes, saturated salt solution is colorless, a bit more viscous than normal water.
 
^ No, even if it is clear there is some APAP left in solution. He was talking about a normal CWE, not this method you've proposed, and for every 100ml of water around 1 gram of APAP will go into solution depending on temperature.

This is an interesting idea, I might give it a go sometime and report back. I wish my chemistry skills were back up to scratch already...

What you've proposed doing is essentially a recrustallization procedure, used to purify a substance when it's contaminated.

You heat the solution and mix in the contaminated product until it reaches saturation then cool and filter. You're left with a more pure solute and the contaminants (not at saturation levels) remains in the liquid. It's basic Organic chem lab stuff. Google or wikipedia saturation and/or recrustallization. All you'd end up with was a solution at it's saturation level for BOTH NaCl and acetaminophen.
