Curious About Trying Psychedelics without a Colon

Hey everybody, first post here, been a lurker for a little while. I'm personally a semi-experienced psychedelic user and have tripped multiple times on LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, 2c-i and 2c-e. I have a younger sister who's 19 now and just today expressed interested in experimenting with psychedelics. She recently began using cannabis medicinally to self-treat her Crohn's disease symptoms and has had excellent results in maintaing her appetite, relieving cramps and nausea, etc.

When she was younger, she was originally diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and after being treated for it for many years eventually had a colectomy to remove the affected part of her colon. Because of this, she's pretty restricted on the things that she can eat as her body isn't able to process certain foods normally. Obviously the lack of a large intestine may set similar restrictions on the use of certain drugs, and I'm curious if there are any users here in a similar situation or know of someone who is. Specifically she's interested in psilocybin mushrooms in the form of a tea (that'd be less harsh on her stomach) and I'm not 100% sure how psilocin is metabolized into the blood stream, if it gets absorbed by the colon or gets into the body a little sooner than that.

Again, any knowledge would be useful. This is definitely not something that she wants to jump head first in not knowing how it could affect her, and I've had limited success finding information from people in her situation. I've spoken to a few people who have ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease that have used hallucinogens just fine, but none of them had a colectomy as part of their treatment.

Psilocybin is metabolized to psilocin in the stomach.
Uptake is mainly in the first parts of the intestine.
I found a study where they specifically tested uptake in the jejunum and the colon.
Uptake in the jejunum (section before the colon) was much faster than in the colon.
Not sure though if the colectomy could cause any extra discomforts...

Hope this was of some help? :)

That's very interesting and exactly what I was going for. I'm not so much worried about adverse affects as much as I was curious if she'd even be able to absorb the chemical. If it's metabolized in the stomach and taken mostly in through the jejunum than I think that is what we were hoping for. :) I'd like to get some more responses in case anyone has anything else to contribute, but that's definitely what I was wanting to hear.

the majority of serotonin receptor sites in the body are in the intestines.
who knows, perhaps she may need more to trip?

either way, start small, and slow.

the serotonin receptors in the gut have no action in the psychedelic experience. only receptors being targeted in the CNS are effected. there will be no issue for someone with a colectomy.

This is weird. I don't usually post but my SO has Crohn's and had her colon removed 11 years ago.

She is fine taking shrooms from a safety stand point. In a tea or eating them. She doesn't get blocked or have any stomach or abdominal discomfort. But she doesn't do them very often. Maybe once a year.

I would say take it slow but your sister should be ok. But she should know the risk and make her own decision. If she ended up in the emergency room with a blockage AND was tripping I don't think it would be much fun. Maybe tea would be the safest option.

PM me if you would like more info. I am involved with my local crohns and colitis charity and know quite a bit about the disease.

Not much gets absorbed in the large intestine other than water. Most is absorbed between the stomach and the end of the small intestine.

So, it should be fine.
Personally, I'd avoid shrooms, as tea or otherwise, due to all the other crap in shrooms. They can cause GI upset even in healthy individuals, and she's probably more at risk of that. I'd go with 4-AcO-DMT if you're looking for a shroom-like experience.

That's very good to hear. I still think she's just sort of toying with the idea, more curious about what she can actually do with her condition and definitely not the type to jump in the deep end. If she does decide she wants to try it, I'll make sure she understands the risks and we'll definitely start small. Thanks for the info. :)
