Megathread Cultural Appropriation and Cancel Culture Discussion

They/Zey/zor didn't invite JKR to the fucking Harry Potter anniversary special and I feel like breaking shit.

They should cancel everybody but JFK involved in harry potter fucking ungrateful cunts she gave them the best jobs on the planet and they spit in her face fake fucking cunts.

I have no problem calling people by their preferred pronoun when they tell me what it is, but I can’t stand the people who think I should already know what they decided to label themself as and are just looking for a reason to get pissed if you accidentally refer to them by their sex or use a general term like “guys”. I’m pretty sure suicide rates and the overall rate at which some people explode into psychotic rage says something about mental health, but we better not bring it up….

I live in a small town in the mountains of British Columbia, people here don't give a shit what you are or aren't. Just be decent and you get treated decent. As far as labels go everyone uses them, there's labels for us, labels for them and labels for in-between.

Yeah I think people can express themselves however they like. If they want to live as women or men or whatever, more power to them and I will do what I can to refer to them how they want. But I don't believe people should be scolded when they make an honest mistake.

Also, I stopped believing in magic, god, Santa, etc when I was like ten years old. So I'm not going to say trans men ARE men or trans women ARE women. That's magical anti-science thinking. I'm also not going to be pressured into saying I find trans men attractive, either. That doesn't make me transphobic.

I generally don't think kids should be involved in any of this either at least until they go through puberty. I used to have a different opinion on this but I just don't think they have enough understanding of themselves before they're 16 or 17 and are starting to assume their adult bodies.

I worry the more extreme this whole thing becomes. We are erasing a lot of progress women have made. And homosexuals.

I want to start by saying I know this sounds terrible and I’m an asswhole for even bringing it up….But Iv always wondered what if being gay or trans is a chemical imbalance like ADD or depression, and one day a scientist comes along and finds out what chemical is not in balance and makes a pill containing the needed chemical…then what? Is it then still a matter of a “female soul” in a mans body, or just a simple imbalance

I'm not terribly familiar with trans issues, but that is indeed how many scientists/psychiatrists once viewed homosexuality, as a mental illness/disorder.

To return to that interpretation seems like social regression imo...it's often those at the margins of society who expand the scope of liberty for all people, not just sexual (or any other) minority groups. They expand what is perceived as possible within a given society. That's why I admire the struggle of homosexuals during the 60s and 70s, despite not being gay myself.

I don't think trans people need "correcting". I support them expressing themselves and having whatever kind of surgeries they'd like. I just want them to stop being so extreme about everything.

First gender reveal parties became transphobic. Now parents are choosing to not assume their baby's gender at all until they're "old enough" to express it for themselves.

I agree 100% putting children through hormone replacement therapy or surgery is criminal imho…and I’m not saying it’s a problem or something that needs correcting, more so what if there was a scientifically probable reason behind it, would hormone therapy still be as acceptable opposed to trying to level out whatever imbalances may be involved. I dunno I know it sounds really shitty but I tend to run through a lot of scenarios in my head for everything

Yeah me too. If someone tells me they want to be referred to by a given pronoun or gender, I will happily oblige. But you can't expect someone to know and get mad at them if they meet you and refer to you wrong. People that do that are looking to be victims, IMO. Now on the other hand, if someone tells you who they are and how they want to be referred to, and you purposely refuse to do so, then you're a dick.

I have a couple of friends who are trans women (male to female), as I live in a town with a large trans community. They both are primarily guy-like to me in energy and I have a number of times accidentally referred to them as "him" or "he" and they get it, they know I didn't mean anything, it's just in casual conversation, I don't always catch myself. They appreciate that I try. I think the point is the respect. I respect them and their self-identity and that's all they want.

Yeah some people are being very extreme about it to the point that it's aggressive towards society in general, and I don't like that. I think it's simply the result of what tends to happen when marginalized people start to take their power back... they throw the pendulum back in the direction of oppression rather than letting it stop swinging. Which doesn't help anyone, really, but it's understandable. Most of the trans people I know do not do this, though, and just want to be accepted as they are.

My girlfriend's sister (brother now actually) is an asshole about it, and it really gets under my skin. As a woman she was always gay, and was very anti-man (their father is an abusive asshole so I get it, but my girlfriend isn't that way, she likes guys and is never disrespectful to anyone), to the point that she would be rude to me to my face just because I'm a man. Then at age 38, she decided she is a man and started taking hormones. Come to find out a lot of her friends are doing it, too. She suddenly started telling my girlfriend that she's such a "normie" for being cis-gendered and straight, and almost was trying to make her feel bad about it, or something. It was weird. She immediately started aggressive scolding people who just met her for not referring to her as "him", even though she doesn't look like a man and hadn't eve introduced herself. She started talking about how referred to babies as a gender is oppressing them. It really annoys me, especially since until recently she didn't seem to feel that way, and now suddenly expects everyone to feel the same way or else they're ignorant/oppressors/etc. It seems like she just wants to be angry and feel morally superior. But my two trans friends (I have met a number of others but I have two friends who I actually hang out with who are trans man-to-woman) aren't like that at all, they're really sweet and are just quietly trying to be who they are.

my trans friends who transitioned as children are nice and not like that, but i do notice those are not trans but want to be woke are some of the worst about things lol.

I even had woke white women tell me i cant claim ancestory to african americans cause my skin aint black, well my DNA is still 8% african through ancestory.com enough to pull up a long list of realitives in america i didnt know i had that would be classifed as removed cousins. Its my fucking ancestory even though its way back in the line i still carry a fucking huge chunk of the DNA and can see where my ancestors were taken on slave ships to america a very long time ago. Like whats up with woke culture lol?

For some people, it's a competition to see who can be the most righteous, and it makes the feel morally superior over others. I don't think they understand that they're hurting their causes by giving people ammunition to believe that the issues they are so up in arms about are not valid issues.

For some it's because being gay or bi isn't trendy or edgy enough anymore. Why be a gay male/bisexual woman/etc when you can be a "straight" "woman" or a "non binary" "pansexual"?

I feel sorry for the few who are legitimately trans who have to watch a bunch of bored high schoolers appropriate their life struggle as a fashion statement.
