BOULDER, Colo. -- Boulder residents are being warned about the dangers of opium tea after police learned that a University of Colorado student died from an overdose.

The Boulder County Drug Task Force is investigating the February death of 20-year-old Alex McGuiggan. They said McGuiggan ingested a fatal quantity of opium after brewing a tea made up of poppy seeds and pods.

The coroner's office ruled Friday that the death was accidental, caused by a morphine overdose.

Boulder police said McGuiggan may have legally purchased poppy pods online and processed them to create the tea.

“We do believe he knew that he was ingesting morphine,” said Boulder police spokesperson Sarah Huntley. “We are not so convinced, however, that he was aware it could be fatal.”

Huntley said because the pods can be bought on the Web, there is a perception that making opium tea is not dangerous.

“To have the actual seeds or the pods themselves is not illegal,” Huntley said. “Once you start trying to extract the drug from the plant it can become very dangerous and in this case, unfortunately, it was fatal.”

McGuiggan’s roommate, Landon Barrett, found him lifeless in his bed hours after McGuiggan drank at least two cups of the tea and took an anxiety medication. Barrett has never tried opium tea and said another roommate made the batch of tea with McGuiggan.

Barrett claimed none of them realized just how dangerous the tea could be.

“We had no idea,” he said.

Barrett said McGuiggan was a Chicago native and an English major who loved playing guitar and writing music.

“Everyone loved him and he was just nice to everyone and never had anything against anyone,” he said tearfully.

The drug task force is investigating whether the roommate who helped McGuiggan make the tea committed a crime. Huntley said the district attorney will determine whether charges will be brought.

Boulder County Coroner Tom Faure called this an extremely rare case and said he knows of no other cases of morphine overdoses involving opium tea.

Umfortunatly for every 10 educated/safe drug users there are the one that don't know enough about the drugs to be using them, and therefore bad things happen. There aren't reports on the 10people though it's the one kid. This is a reason why drugs have such a bad name. I'm not ripping the kid nobody deserves to die over a high, it's just that some peoples ignorance causes disasterous things to happen.

Interesting that they don't even know the law. A quick read through the CSA- starting with CI working up would have resulted in her saying

"The seeds aren't illegal, but the pods are"

and the person who helped would be in jail right now.

No way, is this an april fools joke? Dieing from like one bag of heroin is rare as hell let alone poppy pod tea? Im assuming thats what they mean by "opium tea". I cant imagine how low one's tolerance has to be to fall victim to poppy tea.. RIP & much love, light & respect but it will seriously take me a month to wrap my mind around this one..

so i saw the site someone linked above about the 17year old's parents and i figured the below is worth highlighting.
When you make an infusion from these seeds, there is no telling how much opiates your solution will contain. You are truly playing a potentially deadly game of Russian roulette.

damn I lived in the dorms with this kids roommate, the one they quoted, and had a few classes with him. Didnt know the kid who died though. Rest in Peace man, sorry that happened.

benzos and opiates are always potentially deadly mix.
They always seem to blame it on the opiates, though.

RIP

^ yea its because they dont wanna demonize legal drugs jsut the illegal ones. demonzing only drugs that are actually dangerous would be counter productive to governments messages. god forbid we actually acknowledge all the deaths from tobacco and alcohol. yea RIP here let this serve as a reminder to always know the drugs you put in your body.

People tend to underestimate the potency of PPT. The high is very similar to a high dose of methadone.

Drinking a bottle of vodka is pretty dangerous also. You have got to know your dosage. When using a new substance it would be wise to start with a tiny dose. Combining a new substance with another drug is plain foolish. That should be obvious to anyone with half a brain. Don't blame the drug. Blame the person. You are responsible for your own actions. If someone dies while riding his motorcycle should we ban motorcycles?

^It does sound funny, but it really isn't hard to do.

Does death from eating too much opium sound funny? How 'bout from swallowing a bottle of morphine?

That sort of sentiment is why this kid died...if he knew where one could get the pods and that taking them gives a strong high, then he should have known about the risks inherent in recreational opiate use.

Not to mention throwing a benzo in the mix...he was probably already a little fucked up when he took the tea and underestimated the power of the multiplier effect and/or the potency of his brew.

That ain't funny.

God damnit. So it begins eh.. i'm sorry this kid died but fuck him for messing it up for everyone else because he mixed benzos with the tea. The DEA just needs a few more stories like this to start cracking down hardcore on pods and make stores wash seeds compulsory. Fuck.

I imagine that dying from an opioid overdose is a very, if not the most comfortable way to die.

Really trying not to be a dick here guys but still the concept of "oding off the pods" is for some reason hilarious.

I'm not so sure about that. If a single pod contains 5 to 15 milligrams of morphine alone, plus other chemicals, It could only take seven very strong pods to cause death via respiratory depression, if the individual has no tolerance. I believe the od threshhold for an opiate naive person is around 100mg of morphine.
