I'm looking into going back to school here soon, and would like to follow my interests in writing. I'm not so sure exactly what I'd end up doing, but I'm sure that along the way I'll meet enough people that I can gain a decent understanding of the various jobs that are available to writers.

What I'm looking for is some insight as to what direction (or what degree I suppose) I should look to investigating in regards to getting myself into this field.

As always, thanks in advance for the info.

It depends how "post-modern" you want to be with your writing. Certainly I would call all of my favorite contemporary authors creative (it would be hard not to find a "creative" author if you use the term loose enough). If instead, you're coming it at from, again, a post-modern viewpoint, such as a lot of the threads made in the Words forum, then it might be a bit more difficult.

Stand-up comedian? Part of a marketing team for commercials and such?

Ya, you've got the perpetual "creative-writing teachers teaching creative writing to creative writing students" path as suggested above. Or just get an English major and take a creative-writing track within it. Struggling author (akin to struggling muscian, actor, dancer, etc) could be the only option, but if you're willing to sacrifice, some English majors end up getting jobs they like ;)
