I know this technically belongs in DiTM, but I figure it's more relevant here. Move if need be :)

It may be old news for some people, but it's the first I've heard..

Council to vote on public smoking ban

A council in Melbourne's south-east will vote tonight on whether to ban smoking in public areas, including parks, on footpaths, and in car parks.

The Monash City Council consulted with residents and local traders about the ban late last year.

Councillor Paul Klisaris says more than 1,000 people spoke to the council, and he says they were generally behind the plan.

He says he will be voting in favour of the ban.

"What we want to see is a clear pathway for all in our community to be able to come and go through these venues without having to navigate through a traffic of smoke," he said

I was thinking about this the other day, who would enforce it? Is it the police's job to, or council workers?

^ yeah I was going to say, the police would never agree to enforce this one, way too much work.

I can't imagine most of the community being behind this. i think roughly 20% of Australians smoke, so what the fuck are these people supposed to do when they are not in their homes? Go for 9 hours at work without having a smoke? It wouldn't be a productive work environment either.

I would be very surprised if this ever got off the ground, or if it was ever enforced.

Yeah it is 19% atm. And it is falling rapidly. The last few decades have seen an enormous drop in smoking. Possibly as more people know of the dangers and the prices just keep on rising.
In 1980 it was 34% of our population that smoked, compared to 19% today.

Smoking rates in Australia.

Over in NZ approx half the population wants smoking totally banned ;

I would love it if they banned public smoking. Nothing worse than standing at a traffic light and having some goon blowing smoke all over me. The Queen St Mall is a classic example of a public place that the council needs to step in an fix. Since the indoor smoking ban all you see from the top of the mall is a constant haze. The council has no problem enforcing parking laws... when the price is right, so I can't see them not wanting to hand out smoking fines if asked. Although they did have smoking pens at the Gold Coast BDO (and some poor suckers were inside them) no one seemed to take much notice. You will just have to find a nice stealthy place to have a dart, just don't get in my way if I'm wanting to have a sneaky spliff. ;)

^ don't get me started on people walking and smoking when I'm trying to walk adjacent to them! Keep your flaming-ash-flicking-death-sticks away from me fuckers!! :P

Thanks for the statistics poledriver :)

^ haha <3 not so much the cigarettes but the people waving them around carelessly in my vicinity. Being ashed-on or burnt is a pain. Mad Men days you say? I could live with that; bottles of whisky on my desk being appropriate and all ;)

^ Yeah it would be pretty awesome, except I don't really like drinking... maybe I need to go back even further, to laudenum days?

As for the cigarettes, I know what you mean. I am careful with my cigarettes and where I smoke, who I smoke near, etc... but I know a lot of smokers aren't so considerate.

The worst thing about Queen St Mall for me is being on my lunch break and being hassled by someone for a cigarette or change every single day. :\

Honduras law says family can call cops on people smoking in home

THE last refuge is vanishing for besieged smokers - at least in Honduras.

A new law says family members can call in the police on people who smoke at home.

The law bans all smoking in most closed public or private spaces and orders smokers to stand at least six feet away from nonsmokers in any open space.

The law that went into effect on Monday doesn't clearly ban smoking at home. But it expressly says relatives or visitors can summon police to deal with smokers at home.

Some analysts say the law will be almost impossible to enforce in the Central American nation, which is also a significant producer of cigars.

I'm seeing more and more normal looking people not smoking. Just today outside a mall there were 6 people smoking, one had a baby in a sgtroller.

Seriously I could not tell them apart from people that you see in the methodone line ior at the vending machine for rigs or waiting outside of cashies at 8.45am

I wish I lived back in Mad Men days when I could smoke everywhere, anytime. :)

I find it hard to believe people used to smoke on planes and in hospitals so recently... One of my favourites:

I am old enough to remember smoking in planes and it was not pretty. I also have a long history of coming home from pubs with burn holes in the sleeves of my shirts. :(

I was reading an article the other day about one of the oldest snuff produces in Europe who have seen sales rise since the smoking bans. I had no idea was snuff was until then. I was hoping it was some sort of ye oldie cocaine dispenser, but it's not. :\

Damnit I was hoping to visit Honduras when I was in central america. I always though that you could at least rely on the third world to be slow to ban vices like smoking. turns out I was wrong:\

I'm trying to quit smoking. However, I would never be in favour of a public smoking ban. smokers really can't smoke anywhere at the moment, and if you have a cigarette addiction having to hold off from smoking until you are in your home would be fucking painful. besides, nothing beats walking along having smoke whenever you feel like it.

I have always found self rightious cigarette smokers to be infuriating. i always try not to smoke around children or babies, I never smoked inside my own house because of the smell either. but I should be able to smoke outside if i feel like it. it isn't hurting anyone but the smokers. I bitched when they introduced no smoking in Victorian bars (mainly because the sadistic bastards did it winter). but I much prefer it now. You smoke less, and the place doesn't reek of smoke. Although I have noticed alot more fart smells since they introduced the ban which is pretty noxious:o

Snuff is big on the oil rigs due to the blanket ban on smoking. Some also chew tobacco to get around it. Anyone tried either?

Apparently frankston council has a smoking ban for its outdoor mall but nobody has been fined yet.

And I believe it was council officers who were doing the enforcement.

lol ciggis are last thing the council shld be worried bout in public

Far more addictive than nicotine is the hysteria behind silly people wanting to ban something which nobody (I mean non-smokers) really cared about 10 - 15 years ago.

You'll find that nearly all smokers are very polite, and would not want to affect anyone by doing so and will often move away from non-smokers.

This is all just bollocksy hysteria. If you're annoyed by someone smoking, either move a metre away, or ask nicely if the smoker can do the same.

PROBLEM FUCKING SOLVED.

If I want to smoke, I will. I certainly will do my utmost to avoid affecting others by it.

As I said, the hysteria is far more addictive than the nicotine.

Really... Did ANYONE give a shit about smokers before all of these ad campaigns? The answer is 'NO.' And if you disagree, then you're likely making it up.
