Could codeine and dihydrocodeine become prescription only in the uk?

I was just reading a newspaper article about a doctor person basically saying cocodomal and paramols are useless as they contain such a small amount of active ingrediants they don't give any adequate pain relief than an ordinary paeraceatomal and ibuprofen anyway it went on to say the government will be reviewing current regulations of opiate\opioid containing medicines by the end of next month and that the problem is much bigger and much more neglected than previously thought.

I think if anything they should make otc products stronger 8mgs of codeine is really pathetic unless of course your doing a cwe but the vast majority of people don't even know paeraceatomal can harm you let alone what a cold water extraction anyway I think or probably wish they would raise the pathetic 8mgs to say 15 mgs for cocodomal and paramols raise it to 8.75 mgs or something the reason I think they should do this is it would save the nhs a lot of beds if people in bad pain didn't need to go to the doctor every time just to get a prescription pjs it would be an extra 60 mgs of codeine in the already 256mgs we currently have in the uk maybe they will reduce it instead to 4mgs or something stupid to 'curb addictions' I'd love to here what you guys have to say about this. And how likely do you think it is that the government will actually had cocodomal and paramols otc?

Never done a CWE but it seems like a total ballache for such a small amount, I had a solid supply of 60mgs but It got very pricey.

There is no reason to stop selling them i can remember taking 2 Nurofen Plus about 15 years go, I had zero opiate tolerance or experience and they seemed to work, they worked so well that I started taking them every day.

Well, they made codeine & dhc Rx only in Belgium a few years ago. So, sure, it can happen. Dunno if it will.

If that happens that it's over for me tbh....you might have seen my post in Europe & Africa Drug Discussion about how Western Europe is more conservative in general drug use but UK/Ireland are particularly worse.

More government regulation....great. Are we not already living in a nanny state?

The UK is going down the shitter fast with the half assed brexit and social justice being put into law. I wouldn't be surprised to see it be like the movie V for Vendetta in 20 years.

codeine was OTC in australia until this year, and it's now prescription only. it can - and does - happen, sadly.

what do you mean by "social justice being put into law"? social justice is a good thing - we should all hopefully want that - as oppose to...social injustice. :)

As America's poodle, and with Trump's opiate crackdown in US, I'm 90% certain that codeine and DHC will become prescription only before the end of this year here in the UK. C'est la vie.

Fucking ridiculous, but when the hysteria over certain drugs increases, the knee-jerk reaction of reactionary politicians is always to increase regulations to reduce any access to drugs of those classes.

I think australia banning OTC codeine is a bad move for other countries too, as it leaves the UK as one of the few english speaking western nations where you can still buy codeine preparations OTC.

Yep, it absolutely can happen.

And they repeated the lie over and over unchallenged. I couldn't even begin to tell you how many times I've heard experts on the news tell people that these codeine products cause liver and organ damage, with the clear implication that it's the codeine at fault. It's a lie, but they repeat it over and over. And it's used to justify making them prescription only.

Yeah - disgraceful. No accountability for their lies either.
It just means that a whole lot of people have to go without pain medication for lots of different afflictions that cause pain, but no doc would ever write a scrpit of (mild) opiate painkillers for.

Fucking bullshit. I hate the tories.

Honestly, I don't want to live in this scary future. It seems that governments are becoming draconian regarding medicines that have a recreational value.

What's the point of life if you can't enjoy it with a few drugs. And don't get me started on "There's family/friends/music/food". Not everyone enjoys those or has them. If Southern Ireland (Republic of Ireland) follows suit, then I'm not sure I want to live anymore in this country or completely.

Added question: Is dihydrocodeine different from codeine? Is it availalbe in R.O.I like in the UK?

DHC is more potent than codeine weight for weight, but the subjective effects are virtually identical afaic. I don't bother with it myself because I don't think it's available OTC in generic form, only in branded preparations such as Paramol, which is around a fiver a packet as opposed to ?1.50 for 32 generic co-codamols. I don't know about availability in R.O.I, but if you can get Paramol then there ya go.
