Coughing in relation to high

When I cough after I smoke, I notice I get significantly higher. And it's not just because it usually means I'm smoking more or better bud. I notice a difference between when I cough purposely and when I ignore the desire to do so. It's quite significant. Can anybody explain it to me?

Other people have told me they experience the same thing, so maybe I'm not insane.

I did a search and didn't notice this topic anywhere.. Sorry if I missed it.

I am not aware of any physical reasons of why this happens. But I do tend to get more high when I cough while smoking. You know how it goes.."You're not smokin' til you're chokin!"

I've heard discussion about possible vasodilation in the lungs due to coughing, speeding up the distribution of THC around the body, I don't know if its true or not, I strongly doubt it...

well, wow, let's think hard 8)

if you smoke a bit enough hit to the point you cough, you are obviously taking a large hit and inhaling it A LOT, hence getting A LOT higher than if you barely inhaled it....

problem solved!

^ yep =D

also, some bud seems to have a "lung expanding" effect.. i notice it especially with potent sativas. it's hard not to choke on them.

But that doesn't explain his statement "I notice a difference between when I cough purposely and when I ignore the desire to do so. It's quite significant." I assumed he ment, if he coughs perpously, he gets higher.

I'd say placebo. If you ignore the "desire to do so," which I'm guessing means you hold in your cough, you don't feel as high if you do cough, right? I'm sure it's just a mental thing where you're giving into something you want to do to make yourself feel more comfortable.

i didnt see that part, but i'd go with placebo, though it could be possible i suppose

That was my guess.. I don't know what else it could be.

Explain why people cough after a not so large hit?

That's basically the bronchodilation THC causes, it should happen with every bud, although the ones higher in THC would ofcourse cause more dilation.

I never have heard of that until now, but it does make sense. But I'm not sure if it is true or not, but it's something that I believe.

But I do seem to get higher when I cough to. Like lately, my friend and me have just been riding around smoking fatass blunts of good bud. We both take 3 hits and then pass it. It's funny because my friend will do the same thing that I do. The first hit, we will take big hits. The second hit, it will be hit, but not to big. And then the third hit, no matter what, we will cough. It could be big or small, we will just cough. And it seems like everytime I cough from that third hit, I feel the weed even more.

But this is a intresting topic.

I definitly get higher when I cough...the downside is it makes you look like a rookie toker :)

My other thought is that its just something to do with the hyperventilation/high oxygen effect of coughing, which is a little reminiscent of the effect you get if you get a huge vaporizer hit.

coughing purposely is retarded

taking a big enough hit to make you HAVE to cough is effective...altho hard on your lungs.

if you're coughing after taking a hit, either while blowing it out or after exhaling, it's just a head rush, and since you just smoked a mind-altering substance the high is increased for a while, but if you're doing it on purpose it probably won't last as long as opposed to a good hit of bomb.

{Peace~~

Coughing opens up your lungs up. Giving them more surface area to put THC into the blood stream.

Coughing opens up the capilleries in your lungs which allow for great absorbtion of THC.
No placebo, I definetely get higher when I cough

Woah... sources please. If anything, coughing should make the capilleries smaller (if coughing even directly affects them).
