I've had a really bad cough for 2 weeks I've avoided my usual cough medicine because it has Dextromethorphan in it and I'm on 150mgs of Venlafaxine daily and all advice it not to mix the 2.

I've been to 3 pharmacies, one would give me anything and said I needed to go to my GP (2 weeks for anon emergency appointment) the other 2 gave me Guaifenesin based medicine I've gone through the best part of a liter in 2 weeks to no effect.

Anyone got any better suggestions, its a fairly fry cough but it come in fits and I'm bringing some quite hard stuff up at times (sorry for those easting breakfast).

I see a few contain Codeine but there seem to be some doubt about how effective that actually is as a cough suppressant, I'm on my way to the super market in a bit and will try talking to another pharmacist as its really starting to hurt my chest and is showing no sign of getting better.

Didn't know where else to post this, I know its not exactly the most serious issue in the world but thought someone might have a good cure, I've tried all the honey and lemon one man can stand !!

I know this is hardly scientific, and there have been some studies which show it to be no better than a placebo (mostly in kids though), but codeine does the trick for me.. Cocodamols and a CWE if you can't find codeine linctus? Pholcodeine linctus is a lot more common, and although entirely useless as a recreational opioid it does seem to work just as well as an anti-tussive as codeine does for me..

DHC is anti-tussive too so you could go down the Paramol/CWE route too, although it is more expensive (grr!)

If you are coughing up thick sputum, your chest is hurting and it isn't getting better it might be wise to get yourself checked out by a doctor to make sure it isn't a chest infection - they are obliged to provide emergency appointments (although they might not make this obvious) or you could go to a walk-in centre? Especially if the sputum is greenish or if you are having fevers/shortness of breath..

Finally if the sputum is really thick, a decongestant might help loosen things up.

Take care of yourself atm! <3

^ you probably won't even need to CWE the DHC if you're using it medicinally, though yeah, it's relatively expensive. Some mild stimulants can help sometimes too, stuff like ephedrine.

^ Ha! That's true, I didn't even think of using it medicinally not recreationally.

Ephedrine can help, it also helps unblock noses and generally unbung you up..

What you need, atm, is some TLC.

Just got some Pholcodine Linctus am already on the co-codamol quite regular because of the headaches from the Venlafaxine I try to keep my usage to a minimum because of all that APAP. I'll see how it goes over the weekend but if its no better by Monday I'll get to the GP because I think its turning into a chest infection, judging by the colour of what I'm bringing up.

I can't be using any stims as much as a good 200mgs of proper phet would have me right as rain, the other complications would out weight the benefits;)

A CWE is off the cards as I'm looking after my 4 year old on my own today, so a double dose of the Pholcodine will have to do

Thanks for the advice happy for you to close before we get any more descriptions of what people are coughing up

Haha. Hope you feel better soon atm.. I would definitely go to the GP on Monday if you are no better. Look after yourself <3
