Hello,
I am am a student who is considering doing a correspondence(off campus) course in the first study period this year through Open Universities Australia and I was wanting to know what peoples experiences are with these types of courses, any study tips and special considerations that i should be aware of?

Just checked the Open Universities Australia website. Im not too familiar with this program, but I can give you some advice on Australian Universities.

What course are you specifully studying and at what University? You have to be careful about these online courses as they promise the world and yet return very little.

Dada just to let you know I am pretty sure you can do correspondence courses at many universities, not just ones that are online only like the one you mentioned.

This may be a better option for you as you may be able to study somewhere more recognised.

I applied online. But the courses is real It seams pretty mainstream. . Its real popular. I think it's done through monash. I can do everything but attend tutorials i.e. go to lectures . I was just wondering if there are any common problems with studying in this way like, is it harder cos you cant consult with a teacher n stuff like that.

Monash is one of the better uni's in Australia so you're fine... they are one of the best for research, so it is definitely a recognised course. Good luck :)

Maybe Melbourne is nicer than Sydney, but you can hardly say Monash is in Melbourne... it is so fucking far away... well too far for me to ever consider going there ;)

u mean in clayton campus ? thats about 20-30 mins from the city, there is a caulfield campus its a bit smaller and thats about 10-15 mins from the city.

Are you planning on pursuing psych as a career? If you are, I'd make absolutely certain that the course you're doing is accredited by the Australian Psychological Society, otherwise you'll have trouble getting registered when you finish (or even getting into a fourth year). If it's Monash Uni's standard first year psych class then it's definately going to be accredited, but it's not going to hurt to check and make sure that that's what you're doing.

I have a friend who's studying through Open Universities and she's enjoyed it so far. She works two jobs and lives out of the city, so it's a lot easier than actually attending classes. You've just got to keep yourself motivated.

And Monash caulfield isn't too bad, but clayton is ages away from the city, particularly if you don't have a car. Can you even get there without a car??

caulfield is like 2 or 3 suburbs over from clayton. Not to bad for me personally, thanks for your guys reassurance and advice.

Yeah Clayton sucks balls... I have to go down there every now and then as the co-supervisor for my PhD up here at Sydney Uni, is based at the CSIRO down at Clayton... almost impossible to get out there in any reasonable time without a car...
