EL RENO, Okla. (CBS) ― An Oklahoma driver ended up on the wrong side of a police taser because a medical condition left him helpless.

El Reno police officers approached a vehicle that had spun-out on the interstate. Inside was a man who they thought was drunk or on drugs.
The man was wrestled out of his truck on Interstate 40 because he wasn't cooperating with police. Moments later police tazed the man.

After several attempts officers were finally able to get the combative man into custody. What they don't realize is the 53-year-old wasn't drunk or on drugs. He's was in severe diabetic shock. In fact, his blood sugar level at the time was 11.

Experts say a person suffering from diabetic shock will often show signs or symptoms closely related to somebody who's intoxicated. That can include confusion, aggression, shaking, sweating and disorientation.

"Eleven is pretty low blood sugar and he would not be able to process those commands coming from the officers," explained Dr. Mary Ann Bauman.

Police Chief Ken Brown said his officers had no way of knowing the man who was resisting arrest was in need of medical attention. "His actions, his demeanor, his lack to communicate led the officers to believe he was under the influence of intoxicants or narcotics."

Once police realized what was really happening, they called an ambulance and the man was rushed to the hospital. It was there police finally saw his medical alert necklace hidden under layers of clothing.

"Unfortunately, from the officers' aspect, they feel extremely bad after they learned that it in fact was a medical need and not someone who was under the influence of an intoxicant, drug or alcohol," Brown said.

Click the link and watch the video. Shit is sickening. Pigs are way too trigger happy with the tasers these days.

this dosent mention that these officers were trained to recognize this difference between diabetic shock and intoxication

That is absolutely despicable.

I have actually seen a story pretty much exactly the same as this, a few years ago (I can't remember where I saw the video though).

Police were called to an apparent "domestic disturbance" reported by neighbours, but what neighbours were hearing was actually the wife screaming down the phone to get an ambulance for her husband who was in diabetic shock. The police came in to the house thinking that the husband was hitting his wife, and tasered him, threw him in the cop car, took him back to the police station and repeatedly tased him until he DIED.

Now THAT was a disturbing video...

Okay, so a vehicle spins out and they begin to wrestle the man out of the vehicle and then taze him? Jesus, on drugs or not that's a bit rough.

Yeah, to them the only issue here is that they weren't intoxicated. They'd have absolutely no qualms about it if the victim actually was intoxicated. Like someone above said, drug use and tasing don't usually go well together.

If someone is hyperglycemic they will smell like sugar, take a whiff of their breath, it's a simple test. Aside from that it is extremely easy to mistake hyperglycemia for alcohol intoxication.

What's weird is that every time there is a taser related death they say that the police need more training in how to effectively use a taser. They should just take the taser away from them all together, at least if you get hit with a baton a couple you times you aren't going to die from a heart attack.

Doesn't sound like there will be any consequences for those incompetent piggies then? Its a shame, I think police should face as serious a charge for assauling innocent members of public as we would for assaulting them!

This guy was hypoglycemic, which is low blood sugar, not high. Hyperglycemia will not usually cause symptoms like alcohol intoxication except possibly some aggression (unless it was a case of EXTREME hyperglycemia). Hypos exhibit much more similar symptoms to intoxication, and also pose a much more immediate danger (rapid unconciousness, coma etc) to the diabetic than a high blood sugar.

haha! .....indeed. What a disgrace. He can't have posed that much of a threat to them, it's not like there was only 1 cop there. Goddamn, whether it's a gun or a taser they've got some itchy trigger fingers don't they?

Think you all gloss over how dangerous the cops job can be. Lets take away all their weapons so that way no one can be accidently hurt.

Works for me, maybe then they would be brutalized like we are for doing nothing more than exercising our freedom. Fucking pigs
