Misc Controversial diagnosis?

Hello guys,

I have been abusing drugs since many years ago, sometimes for depression, sometimes because being impulsive, but mostly for loneliness.
Honestly I don't know if could list all of the drugs I have taken, but what I did mostly were mild opiates (Codeine,Hydrocodone,Tramadol), psychedelics (DXM, LSD) and lots and lots and LOTS of benzos (Alprazolam, Clonazepam, Lorazepam, Bromazepam, Flunitrazepam, Midazolam, etc.).

These last months I have reduced my intake a lot, only to Lyrica(Pregabilin), Diazepam, Clonidine, and Modafinil for working purposes.

I have tried to get off benzos but couldn't, and with only 4mg Diazepam per day doing the work, honestly I gave up.

But I have another problem, very much like what happens when I am out of benzos: I start to lost energy, lost every bit of empathy, and after 48/72hs, my body cannot regulate it's temperature; I try to wake up to go to work but feel an unraveling cold, I cannot move because of the shaking, so I close up every window I can; then, very soon, I begin to sweat while still feeling an unbearable cold, and so on the cycle repits until I return to bed, losing another day of work.

Now, given this scenario, if I have Lyrica around (not benzos, not Modafinil, not Clonidine [though it helps a little]) with only 200mg, that is like 3 capsules, in just 40' I feel perfectly fine. Like nothing happened, my body very soon starts to regulate its own temperature like nothing. WTF? I have studied every bit of what Pregabalin does, and I cannot link it with this problem.

This happened three or four times now, before, some years ago, usually I would be in benzos withdrawal some days, and needed Clonazepam to cure me, very like Lyrica does to this day, but this is not the case nor benzos help me when I lost control of my body temperature. I really cannot find what is doing the Pregabalin in my head/CNS to cure me so soon.

So I went to a clinic doctor. I told everything you have readed until now. The guy listened to me, and gave me some papers about drug addiction. Then, finally, he said "sorry, but about your colds and heats, try to do your best and not lost your work for now, this is a controversial diagnosis, I cannot help you, sorry".

I was so mad, sad and frustrated, I came directly to home (with a box of Lyrica)...

Could you help me BL? what is the 'secret' of Pregabalin so I can figure my truly problem? I know you guys are like me and hate to not know how a drug is working in your body.

I'm sorry I'm tired and didn't read the WHOLE post, but the first half sounds a lot like me. I'm 19 currently and from 16-18 i did so many different drugs, its like what havent I done. I realiesd I did it for depression/anxiety type reasons and for being bored/lonely.

What you need to do is go to a CBT therapist, i guarantee they will help you a lot and realise the real problems that you have and why you are using and what you are masking by doing these drugs, instead of doing it to get high, your doing it for something else... you may not be "Depressed Clincally" or anything else, but you are causing that by continuous drug use. Go to a CBT therapist, they are the best for these types of situations and problems, and find a phsyc who will see you as an individual instead of symptoms. One who will have sessions with you for a half hour to and hour that think outside the box and will help you, ones that OPEN MINDED.

Find each a phsyc and CBT therapist that you like, is open minded, and will listen and see you as an individual.

i doubt i understand. but maybe taper off the pregabalin, very slowly like ridiculously slowly.

The hypothalamus plays an important role in regulating body temperature, and it does have GABA binding sites. It's quite possible that this temperature dysregulation is related to discontinuing your other GABA drugs, and also explains with pregabalin would help the symptoms.

I went to another doctor, this time was a woman who said I was probably low on Magnesium (that's very unlikely because I take Magnesium to low Modafinil tolerance) and that I should stop taking Lyrica, or at least only one capsule (75mg) for sleep purposes, and instead use anticholinergics when my body cannot regulate it's temperature...

What do you guys think? is this doctor right?

I cannot speak on the matter of benzo withdrawls causing problems with your thermoregulation, but I know that when I am in opiate withdrawl Lyrica takes away all my withdrawl symptoms espically the problems with the thermoregulation. Perhaps there is a connection?

Magnesium can be connected to temperature regulation problems. Did she do labwork to confirm?

What kind of magnesium supplement do you take? Many of them are poorly absorbed, so you really need to take a form that can be readily used by your body (magnesium citrate, malate or glycinate are best.)

Well is almost certainly because of the benzo withdrawal.
How is that possible? I don't think anyone can answer that, but it will certainly go away, so don't despair.
Lyrica elevates the levels of GABA by catalyzing the transformation of Glutamate + Pyridoxin (B3) directly into GABA, using the Glutamate Decarboxylaze (sp?) enzyme, all in one step.
Also, Lyrica binds to 2 calcium channel receptors: alpha 2 subunit Delta 1 (and subunit Delta 2).
How's that clinically significative? Well those receptors prevent the formation of new sinapsis.

how long have you been able to tolerate this body temperature disregulation thing you are describing? are you basing it on how you feel, or by actually taking your temperature?

for me, i always know when the withdrawals start to set in cause i all of the sudden get freezing cold. then, once i dose.. back to normal.

but with a slooooow taper, i was able to get off my drugs with very minimal WDS.

i think maybe you ought to consider your approach with your doctor. either find one who is an addiction medical specialist, or go to a regular doctor and just describe your symptoms, and not saying that lyrica or any drug has anything to do with it. let him come to his own conclusion.

otherwise you're going to be immediately stamped as drug seeking and given the boot.

good luck, you might have to suffer a few days, but that's better than a lifetime of this hell.
