hey everyone,
went to the doctor recently and i have a problem. high blood pressure. my doctor thinks this is due to a number of factors, including being on the Pill, taking speed and smoking pot.
i have a few choices
1. stop taking drugs (i am planning to cut down, but not stop)
2. change my contraception method.
so.. i am wondering if any girls here have tried depo provera (1 injection every 3 months) or implanon (a small implant which will last 3 years)
does anyone have any reports of the methods of contraception? i have been warned they could make my periods irregular.
one more thing... could having high blood pressure be reduced if i started exercising?

Ive used depro. it stuffed my periods up and was never certain if I was going to have one or not...experienced a slight increase in weight (but not much). but other than that Ive never had any problems with it.
Its good to have. I mean I can go out get fucked up as much as I like and Ive never had any unwanted accidents.
Theres no pill to remember to take every day so its convient especially if your having a big weekend. But the down side is its an injection that u get every 3 months and I dont no how u feel about needles.. but hey its convienent.
Id have no idea about how to lower blood pressure sorry. Ive been lucky to never of had that problem. I guess being a non smoker may have something to do with it and Im fairly healthy.

haha bt I actually ment I get wasted on drugs and alcohol and not gotten myself pregnant :) I should of been a bit more specific my mistake

Yes, high BP can be reduced by regular exercise.
Depo Provera is well known for causing irregular preiods - in fact the only person I know who takes it does so because it stops her periods altogether. Personally, I've never tried it,as I found an OCP that suited me (Microgynon 20 - a low dose pill with less chance of side-effects).
Have you tried other OCP's yet? There are a few different classes, so you may find an alternative suits you better. According to Update on Oral Contraceptove Pill's, third generation progestogen's like levonorgestrel (Microval or Microlut) do not raise BP, but these OCP's have to be taken at exactly the same time each day (or within 3 hours of a set time). So if you can't manage that, Depo or Implanon may suit you better.
For more on Depo Provera see rxlist.com, for more on BP and exercise see here.

^^Not if it's caused by a hormonal contraceptive. In fact it can be helpful in the case of women with severe period pain, period related migraines, or iron-deficiency anaemia. If a woman doesn't get periods for other reasons though (such as having anorexia) this can be a problem, as it means there is a hormone deficiency that long-term can lead to problems like osteoporosis and heart disease. And it means you're infertile, at least temporarily.

There are lots of other forms of birth control, that are non-hormonal!
Listed in order of how highly I recommend them (#1 being the best):
  • The IUD (intra-uterine device) -- this is a small metal object inserted into the uterus, and it can be left there for 5-10 years. It is rather expensive (~US$300) and must be inserted by a doctor, but it is VERY safe and VERY effective (99.9%). The only women who should not use an IUD are those who have severe menstrual cramps.
  • The Oves Contraceptive Cap
  • The fertility microscope. See www.isisscope.com . I have personally used and recommend this option.
  • The good ole' diaphragm. It has to be doctor-fitted, and you have to remember to insert it everytime you have sex, but it's cheap and lasts for a long time.
Btw, DEFINITELY exercise to help lower your BP. Running/jogging is particularily effective in this respect.

I've heard lots of stories about the side affects of the depo injection, including severe depression, and the usual weight gain.
I used depo for 6 months and gained a little weight (not much) and that could've been purely my own fault as well.
The reason I stopped was because I found that I had little to no sex drive while on it. I just wasn't interested in sex at all. I figured that the convenience of the injection wasn't worth much if I never wanted to have sex anyway!
The depo just wasn't right for me... but it was really handly not having to remember a pill every day. And not getting a period suited me just fine.
As far as the Implanon goes, I don't know anyone that has tried it.
Hope this helps.

an ex used to take depo due to the emotional craziness of other contraceptive pills (many were tried).
periods stopped altogether and no aparent pyschological effect (and no change in sex drive). if you can handel a big fat needle every so often it might be a good alternative, however it seems that everyone reacts differently to contraceptives.

b4 i was with my g/f she was on depo, and when she came off she didnt have a period for 12 months i think it was. she now has had the implanon put in about 4 weeks ago. isnt complaining, YET! but fuck me you should see the size of the needle they use after the anasthetic (spelt wrong?) it made me drowsy just watching!

thanks to everyone who has replied and given me info so far.
to those who used depo - what is a "slight" increase in weight? this is something i was worried about with depo and implanon
i am fine with needles but the depo ones sound a bit scary. has anyone had an injection of penicillin in their butt before? fucking painful.
i currently take Monofeme, though i was on another pill for a while due to bleeding when i don't have my period, but it was pretty strong so my doc switched me back. though i have been bleeding for the last week (very light) even though i only had my period a week before that, so i'm a bit worried.
i usually take my pill around the same time - but i have forgotton a few times, but i will look into those other pills you mentioned babydoc_vic.
fairnymph: are all of those available in australia? (esp the oves thing) i have heard the IUD increases the risk of pelvic imflammatory disease, and well frankly the thought (and look) of it scares me. i couldn't get the fertility microscope page to load, but i'll try again later.
ellsta: i have no sex drive at the moment anyway :( though i guess i wouldn't want to make that any worse with depo.
discurio: implanon is the option i'm most interested in. as it is quite cheap, and once implanted, i don't really need to worry. though irregular periods would suck. would be interested to hear how your girlfriend goes, though i'll probablyend up being an implanon guinea pig myself
hmm, the thought of exercise scares me, but high BP is pretty crap too

A slight weight increase for me was about 2 kg or so. But I do honestly believe it was my love for beer and lack of exercise that caused that ;)
The needles aren't so scary. As long as I don't watch it go in, I'm fine. I just can't stand the sight of the needle.
Good luck with your decision.

At the risk of appearing unhelpful and callous, could I request that this thread be directed back toward the topics of drug use and contraception? I realise this discussion is progressing well, but rather than act as a health advisory service, I'd like to concentrate on drug health issues where possible, and leave the normal health issues for another forum.
BigTrancer :)

The Oves and the microscope can be ordered online.
The diaphragm and the IUD are both available in Aus.
The modern IUD is EXTREMELY SAFE. It is a very underused method of birth control.

Startenhash: i spoke to my g/f and she'll email u a lovely little story about her implanon escapades. :) one point but if u plan on getting it soon, make sure it is inserted by a propererly trained dr. the dr who put in this one told us how she's had to remove a few that were in too deep (it's right under the skin) and some required surgery. happy menstrating!
(sorry tasteless joke) not funny

Hiya - iMagika here (discurio's gf!) If you want to continue this conversation 'off-air' i'd be happy to help in any way i can (email discurio!). Depo fucked up my body heaps for nearly 2 years and i was told that i may never be able to have kids (have since been told that it was the doctor overexaggerating but it still scared me!) and have recently got implanon inserted and it's the best thing ever (only been 5 weeks though). So far no side effects and i don't have to remember the pill.
As for blood pressure, i'm a physio, and exercise is the best thing for it. but just be careful you don't overdo it with high blood pressure! and taking any kind of drugs is probably not a good idea but thats the decision you make!!!!!

My partner used depo provera injection once and it caused her to have her period for three months non-stop which led to low iron levels (tired ALL the time) and made her extremely run down. And once the non-stop period began there was nothing the doctors could do to stop it. She had to wait for it all to wear off.
And that's just one of the side effects. How it relates to drug use I dont know, but I imagine if you had this happen to you and took drugs you would be well and truely run down.
Its definately something to talk thoroughly with your doctor about.
I actually ment I get wasted on drugs and alcohol and not gotten myself pregnant
sydkiwi , I am in no position to judge, but do you think getting THESE types of contraceptives is a good idea? I think with that outlook on thinkgs you should be carrying a six pack o condoms instead......
finally IUD's are VERY dangerous. I have personally known a girl who had it removed and could no longer have children. NOT recomended if you plan on having a family at some stage down the track. once again, how it reacts with drug use I can't say so speak to the doc.
:)

Please post your source for 'IUDs being very dangerous. My father is an obstetrician/gynecologist and has always told me that the modern IUD is a very safe form of birth control. My mother, who is a specialist in the field of childbirth and pregnancy, once had an IUD herself and corroborates my father's statement.
Note that I am NOT referring to the Dalkon Shield of the 1970s which DID cause some problems for some women.
