One thing that used to work for my friend was squating instead of sitting down when he had to evacuate his bowels. He would put down a piece of newspaper on the bathroom floor, take off his pants and underwear, squat on the paper, and shit. He would then pick up the paper by the sides and dump it into the toilet.

He combined that and a a nice diet full of fiber and his bowel movements though uncomfortable, were tolerable and he was able to establish some regularity and not worry about feeling bloated, constipated, or fear a fecal impaction.
