Conspiracies In American News!

^^ I care about what the masses of the most powerful country in the world are being spoon fed.

I'd like to think that every intelligent minded person cares.
Regardless of whether I buy into it, I still care about how other people are affected.

I'm not going to witness people being brainwashed and be content to simply "change the fuckin channel".

Apathy leads to entropy

please i read both major chicago newspapers everyday and a 3rd local one 3times a week..the trib is on the conservative side and favors the cubs the suntimes(which i prefer) is the more liberal paper and supports the sox i guess a little bit more...

so i am open minded with both sides and i am aware of whats goin on in print ..on tv there are so many pundits its not even funny, so i choose to skip over it...its just i dont care about this right now...take it too the politics thread you will have more success

i recommend the tv station "current" that is prolly my favorite tv channel around..its very liberal but doews give views on everythiung in the world..from the oxy contin epidemic in florida, to shows about cuba and if there is a strong base for a revolution to the glue sniffing problem with young childern in western africa...

highly recomend it just put it on and dont change the channel, they have very quick one 30sec commercials..so no need to change the channel..you will thank me

In this era of media oversaturation extremism, alarmism and scandal do reign surpreme. Unfortunately, you have to throw a proverbial (or in the case of Glenn Beck, literal) temper tantrum just to have anyone pay any attention to you. It is an unfortunate fact of life that subtlety and reason don't sell.
All this being said, it has nothing to do with the stupidity of the United States's populance. Are we a bunch of idiots? Hell yes, but not any more than anyone else. No one, not even the reporters/pundits (no real difference between the two anymore) believe the crap they spew out but they have to keep on producing this dreck just to stay afloat in a sick, dying industry.
This is the fundamental problem: the quality of journalism (television, magazine, newspaper, etc... the bloodly lot of them) is in decline because they are running on obsolete, inefficient business models created in the 40's and 50's and, as a result, are increasingly dependent on ad revenue. News is not news anymore but rather a mad scramble to attract an audience and, in turn, sell stuff to them. Until the various news outlets start adapting their business models to the digital age (how you ask? I have no freaking clue) this degeneration will, unfortunately, continue.
Essentially, the system is broken but not in the way that you think. Working under a business model that embraces rather than ignores technology and actually accounts for the ways that the modern audience consumes content there is no question that legitimate journalism would be far more popular and profitable than partisan dreck.

^^ Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the proverbial temper tantrum is needed for anyone to pay attention to you on American news, and it has nothing to do with the stupidity of the United States populace, then why is news in many other english-speaking countries less extreme? I'm not suggesting the American populace is necessarily "stupider", but a lot of American "news" certainly seems to be. You don't need to throw a proverbial temper tantrum for anyone to pay attention to you on the news in Canada or from what I have seen on the BBC. At least no where near the extent that I see on filth like Glenn Beck. Usually integrity is what people notice. Again, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think other countries journalism has been overrun by ideological pundits to the same extent as the US, and I'm curious as to why this may be.

thats because these tv shows you mention are really all about making money and high ratings and not to much the news..

if they have bad ratings they get taken off the air..the more loud and obnoxious the more your talked about and the more people at home tune in....thats why glenn beck is the way he is im sure he started on radio and moved on up..

*edit* i see you been here since 04 so i know you know now*
but this is a drug harm reduction website not a young republicans meeting we dont care about this thats why you have got not even a page worth a replys in what 10days being up...while the thread a couple below yours "coppin dope in a snowstorm" has been open for 3days and has twice as many views and 2pages of replys

like i said though shows are about money and ratings and the more wild and "controversial" the more people will watch

yeah I joined in 04 but only started posting and reading a couple months ago. This doesn't perfectly fit here, but it is relevant to America and is social, so I figured more Americans, both Canadians and US citizens living in North America, that have access to this watered down journalism would see this thread and maybe reply to it. To me, talking about coppin dope in a snowstorm sounds about as interesting as the act of doing it. Definitely more enlightening topics, but to each their own and I welcome anyone's replies. I'm usually on Psychedelic Discussion where people talk about more than coppin dope, so I thought I might get some good responses from other fellow BL'ers based on my experience in PD.

Capitalism really does lead to all of this sensationalized and frankly completely bogus crap on American television, and America is the epitome of capitalism, so I suppose you answered my question. Thanks!

News media in other countries IS just as bad as it is in the US. Rupert Murdoch (media mogul behind the Fox brand, among other things) does more business in the UK and Australia than he does in the States. Hell, he's expanded his business to fucking China, so don't try suggesting that government control is a solution, although the CBC and BBC are better than most. Mainstream media in continental Europe spews out xenophobic bile that wouldn't pass muster anywhere in the United States except for a John Birch Society newsletter (the French, Dutch and Russians seem to be the worst). However, like I said, this is not a case of capitalism being bad but rather a case of bad capitalism.
