Stimulants Concerta (Ritalin) sensitivity, other options?

I just started taking concerta. I tend to have a minor allergic reaction to it (hives). I'm thinking about switching to a different ADD medication. If I'm reacting this way to concerta (methylphenidate), should I expect to react the same way to other stimulants like dexedrine, adderall etc?

Well methylphenidate is similar to other pharms, but it's not actually an amphetamine. You might not have that reaction with other pharms that are amphetamines (dexedrine/adderall/vyvanse/etc.). I like vyvanse personally, it's a prodrug for dextroamphetamine and acts like a long extended release pill. I don't take it for treatment of ADD. You should really just talk to your physician about it. He is your doctor, after all.

As Professer said methylphenidate is similar to the other prescription stimulants but that doesn't mean you'll be allergic to the others as well. It might not even be the methylphenidate you're having a reaction to, it could be the inactive ingredients that you're allergic too or a change in your diet... How exactly does your reaction present?(how long after taking the concerta do the hives appear, are they all over or just one area?) Are you allergic to anything else(medications and otherwise)? If you're still taking the concerta I would stop until you talk to your doctor because your reactions could intensify if you keep taking it.

About an hour after I take it. Not many hives at all just a little around my hands and legs. My diet hasn't changed since I started the medication. I don't know of any other medication that I'm allergic to other than codeine. I read up on how concerta works and saw that half of the pill is the medication while the other half is nothing. I seperated the activehalf from the inactive half and removed the outer plastic/wax coatings... same reaction. It's no where near severe but I guess it's best I stop taking it.

I heard that vyvanse is very similar to adderall but it lasts longer and isn't as strong immediately. Adderall comes in IR and XR but in Canada only XR is available as far as I know. Since adderall XR is also time release, what is the difference between it and vyvanse? Does it just reduce abuse potential?

Charles Willeford talked about Ritalin, I remember. I wouldn't mess with that again. It's very strange how the doctors have whittled down the medications to some of the worst offenders. You'd think they'd be interested in human nature - but no - they prescribe Ritalin and Hydrocodone with acetaminophen. Fascists.

Well then it would appear you are most likely allergic to the methylphenidate. I would definitely stop taking it and go see your doctor to discuss your options... Vyvanse is a prodrug(inactive until broken down in the body) once broken down it becomes the active chemical dextroamphetamine(d-amph). Initially being an inactive chemical supposedly gives it a longer duration, less side effects, and lowers its abuse potential. Adderall is 75% d-amph so they are fairly similar though I've never tried vyvanse so I can't speak personally.

Good luck and let us know what your doctor says.
