Hi all. First time posting, but my best friend's cousin had his first run with morphine the last year and this question has been eating at him.

Is it possible to develop a complete tolerance to opiates?

Let me explain. After a while, he became addicted several times. However, this last time was different. He could eat 600 mg of morphine and not feel a thing. And when he decided to quit for a while (this was burning through his supply), the withdrawals weren't anywhere near as bad as they had been before. These were pills, so there's no question of quality or potency. Can anyone explain this?

M S Contin has about a 20% bioavailability. So roughly a 120mg a day habit. If this were a daily use, no I wouldn't have any explanation for the lack of withdrawals.
How many days since he last used?

It's been about a month now. He told me he knows the bioavailablity is low but he doesn't want to mainline pills and he's heard snorting opiates lowers it further. Before he quit he had been using for about 3 weeks straight, and there was less and less of a high each time even though he kept increasing the dose.
He remembers morphine withdrawals being terrible, even after 4 or 5 days of use at lower doses. Is it possible he just got used to it?

No such thing as getting used to it. Of course tolerance develops, but upon cessation all opiates have a typical withdrawal.
No, absolutely not. I wasn't advising him to I v pills. I just needed a point of reference. I think you're cousins friend is extremely lucky. This was definitely a wake-up call for him, getting off without rattling. He should count his lucky stars.

Figure I'll update anyone who cares.
It turns out those were just really old pills. Maybe they were stored in bad conditions (heat) and went bad quicker? Who knows. The point being, he got some fresh pills and all was as it should be.
