"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
Monday was a big day for the nation’s cyber police. The Justice Department charged five Chinese military officials with hacking, and brought charges against the creators of powerful hacking software.

But FBI Director James B. Comey said Monday that if the FBI hopes to continue to keep pace with cyber criminals, the organization may have to loosen up its no-tolerance policy for hiring those who like to smoke marijuana.

Congress has authorized the FBI to add 2,000 personnel to its rolls this year, and many of those new recruits will be assigned to tackle cyber crimes, a growing priority for the agency. And that’s a problem, Mr. Comey told the White Collar Crime Institute, an annual conference held at the New York City Bar Association in Manhattan. A lot of the nation’s top computer programmers and hacking gurus are also fond of marijuana.

“I have to hire a great work force to compete with those cyber criminals and some of those kids want to smoke weed on the way to the interview,” Mr. Comey said.

Mr. Comey said that the agency was “grappling with the question right now” of how to amend the agency’s marijuana policies, which excludes from consideration anyone who has smoked marijuana in the previous three years, according to the FBI’s Web site. One conference goer asked Mr. Comey about a friend who had shied away from applying because of the policy. “He should go ahead and apply,” despite the marijuana use, Mr. Comey said.

Earlier, the FBI director said the agency had “changed both our mindset and the way we do business.” He said it worked less “in-box” than it had in the past.

THE FBI may be relaxing its rules about hiring those that are more relaxed.

Faced with the challenge of having to fill 2000 positions this year, many of them in cybercrime, the US federal law enforcement agency has conceded it may have to bend its rules on pot-smoking, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Especially if the FBI hopes to combat increasingly sophisticated cybercrime by hiring top-notch hackers and programmers, a group which boasts more marijuana aficionados than some other profession.

FBI directors James B. Comey told the White Collar Crime Institute annual conference the bureau may have to loosen up its current policy, which dictates you can’t work for the organisation if you’ve consumed marijuana in the past three years.

“I have to hire a great work force to compete with those cyber criminals,” Mr Comey said to the conference. “And some of those kids want to smoke weed on the way to the interview.”

He said the agency was considering ways to amend the existing marijuana use policy.

One conference attendee told Mr Comey that a hacker “friend” had once thought about applying for the FBI but had been put off because of its pot policy. Mr Comey said his friend should “go ahead and apply” anyway.

But Mr Comey’s remark didn’t sit well with a Republican senator during a Senate hearing into cybercrime who rebuked Mr Comey for dismissing the seriousness of marijuana use. Mr Comey then backpedaled and said he had been joking.

Marijuana use has been legalised for recreational use in US states Colorado and Washington since the beginning of the year while marijuana medical use is legal in 20 states.

Yes.

So it's ok for you to amend it for people you wish to hire, but for the rest of the population who face drug testing it's not ok? wtf.

He got raped yesterday at an FBI oversight hearing for that comment and quickly changed his tune.

FBI Director James Comey clarified Wednesday that he has no intention of changing the bureau's current marijuana policy, which bans employing anyone known to have used pot in the past three years.

During an FBI oversight hearing, Comey said he was trying to use humor on the subject of new hires.

"I am determined not to lose my sense of humor, but unfortunately there I was trying to be both serious and funny," Comey said. "I am absolutely dead-set against using marijuana. I don't want young people to use marijuana. It's against the law."

"We have a three-year ban on marijuana. I did not say that I am going to change that ban," he added.

Earlier, the FBI acknowledged the widening acceptance of marijuana as a challenge to the agency's recruitment efforts — particularly in attracting top computer programmers and hackers for its cybersecurity efforts.

"I have to hire a great workforce to compete with those cybercriminals and some of those kids want to smoke weed on the way to the interview," Comey said during a conference Monday in New York City, reported TheWall Street Journal.

The FBI has the authority to hire 2,000 employees this year, many of them assigned to cybertasks, according to the Journal.

Although marijuana is illegal under federal law, 21 states have legalized medical marijuana, including two — Colorado and Washington — that have also legalized recreational marijuana.

i'd rather have the fbi not able to hire people than decide "no-one can smoke weed except us" because i don't like them and also because that would just be a fucked up policy.
