eg for marquis mdma will show up as dark purple or black, instantly or progress from one to another. is the variation just dependent on its synthesis or does it provide some useful info?

same goes for amphetamines. they will test for brown or orange. what does each colour suggest about the substance?

thanks.

Variations in the synthesis should not affect the colour change unless perhaps contaminants exist in the sample, but even then, it usually makes no difference.

Variations in colour change rate can be attributed to constituents of the tablet e.g. binders, excipients etc which may slow down the reaction. Best if you prepare your sample by first grinding to a powder.

so if i was to choose between a pill testing purple and one testing black, i woud just have to pick one and hope its better?

Many things can make Marquis and Mandelin go black. Look for the change of colour from purple or deep blue to black. Pure MDMA crystal will go black quickly, but if the reaction mixture is swirled its usually possible to see the purple. Always test on a white background; tile, plate or acid resistant surface under white light. Use an inert stirrer to swirl such as a glass rod.
