Voters in the western Colorado town of Fruita on Tuesday approved a 5 percent sales tax on medical cannabis and related paraphernalia, making it the first city in Colorado to tax pot.

Fruita ― an agricultural community located west of Grand Junction near the Utah border ― doesn't yet have any medical-cannabis dispensaries, which have proliferated in Denver over the past year.

The tax will go into effect on May 1. City officials expect it to raise about $100,000 in the first full fiscal year, despite the current lack of dispensaries, according to the ballot issue.

Nearly 60 percent of Fruita voters approved the tax, according to unofficial election results posted on the Fruita municipal website.

Colorado Attorney General John Suthers ruled last November that a sales tax could be imposed on medical pot.

“Colorado law is clear: Medical cannabis, in most instances, should be subject to state and local sales taxes,” Suthers said. “This formal opinion should help clear up many of the uncertainties surrounding the taxation of medical cannabis.”

(sega420- yes i replace the word marijuana with cannabis with every thread i repost)

Is this good or bad news? all I can gather really is people will be paying more for pot, & lining the governments pockets?

fogive me if I got it totally wrong..

personally i think this makes it a bit more legitimate. and it'd be lining local government's pockets, which isnt necessarily a bad thing. some of the towns out in that region of the state could really use the extra income.

oh and i guess nederland just decriminalized mj, not taxed it.

A pot tax is always a good thing IMO. The more states and cities start taxing it the more other areas will become jealous. Eventually the federal government will become jealous and want to start taxing it too. The government loves taxes! Then before you know it were going to have legitimacy like alcohol consumers.

EDIT: Sega: What is England doing in the MMJ department?

dude, im scottish not english. everyone gets ONE warning about that ;)
the UK is not JUST england (americans seem to think it is).
it is made up of Scotland (we have the oil), wales (they have sheep) and england (they have...the government) and northern ireland (they have terrorists).

but aye, back to the point-
there have been MANY dam style coffe shops popping up in recent years.
sure they get shut down but a few have re-opened many times too.

pretty much over here you can get sativex and a marinol type pill, but the people who are prescribed it are few and far between.
although there are groups like THC4MS and others who provide Cannabis for patients of MS, cancers, etc.
to be honest man, the vast majority of the public in the UK doesnt really see ganja as a problem.

in fact when growhouses are busted its not like a swat raid like it would have been 10 years ago.
a lot of the time they just say "could you come with us into the living room while we empty the grow room please, sir" and depending on the amount of plants, sometimes they dont even arrest them then and there.
theres been many times when theyve raided a house, nobodies been home, and they just leave a note saying
"please contact such&such police department by such&suchdate regarding your plants, thank you :) "
