Colleges/Universities that offer adulterant screening kits?

Hey everyone -

I'm a member of Students for Sensible Drug Policy at Ithaca College and I'm currently researching what the standard might be for academic institutions offering adulterant test kits to students. Does anybody know of, or attend any schools where they make them available for students to purchase for harm reduction purposes?

Thanks, I really appreciate it.

fantastic idea, though I'm sure there would be a way to monitor who purchases the test kits (either legally or illegally) to "flag" these people to be watched. obviously why would a student purchase a testing kit for E unless he was selling or using E? I guess upon purchasing they could use the "swim" defense.

Huh, I've absolutely never heard of those being offered in any university. It sounds like it would be a reasonable thing to do although tbh I kinda feel like most establishments aren't ready to admit so much drug use is going on under their noses in the first place... :\

And yeah good point Serotonin.

"sir so why are you in possession of this ecstasy test kit?"- LEO
"oh I wanna make sure my cafeteria food isn't tainted with piperazines, dxm, ketamine, meth, or other unpleasant drugs" -me
Lmfao that would be funny.

Yes - part of what we are trying to figure out is how the policies (if there are any) are set up around this. Here in Ithaca we have a close relationship with our Health & Wellness Counseling director, who is very supportive of the move to provide kits and very interested in getting numbers from other schools where it has been implemented.

Yeah I can see where it's difficult to draw the line between harm reduction and promoting drug use, however we all know that no amount of punishment/avoidance of the issue completely will deter students from drug use. All we have is education on our side ... fortunately, this policy here would not involve the residential staff, nor the Public Safety office.

What would the point of this be? Students if they wanted to could just buy them on their own like people do with MDMA/MDA testing kits.

The point is to provide accessible harm reduction strategies for our peers. We want to make these more accessible for students and will work to promote their availability - many are not even aware that these types of things exist.

Isn't Ithaca part of the State University system? I know if kids have drug convictions, even misdemeanor it can prevent them from getting federal aid. I don't know how these kits would be funded, unless a private company donates them.

Nope - we're private. We can fund the kits ourselves, as a student organization. Also, it's not a legal issue - it's about reducing harm for students who will be buying E, L, etc. anyway, no matter what the restrictions are against them. We are looking to provide safety methods, not to condone drug use.

That's interesting. I worked at a community college in Florida. We didn't have much as far as harm reduction at all besides occasional events. It was controversial when SGA brought in speakers to talk about safe sex. After that they kept a big jar of condoms for students who needed them.

This was only ten years ago! Not nearly as proactive as you guys up north. That being said, your program could be a nice pilot for others to follow.
