Cold Showers

Yeah it's incredible how great you feel post-shower/bath!

Holding my head and especially back of neck under the water is the hardest part and subsequently the part of my body that when doused, makes the most difference to my anxiety. Increasing cranial circulation could be an important aspect of it's anxiolytic efficacy. I actually look forward to doing my head/face/neck the most simply as it's truly where the "challenge" lies.

I might have a hot bath tonight, seeing as it's sunday and i'm having a relaxed day.

Think it's been years since I last had a hot bath. Always been a shower kinda guy.
Partly because as a young child I distinctly recall my playful frolicking being interrupted by a hasty glance down to see a brown foreign object submerged betwixt my thighs and howling with tears!
What was this brown log floating seemingly trying to attack my legs?! I hadn't a clue and from that day on, i've been terrified of baths.
truestory.

When me and my ex gf got our first apartment, there wasn't any electricity for a few weeks.

It was summer and we live in Texas. She said when she lived in Australia, she would always take ice cold showers to cool off.

I gave it a shot. Not like I had a choice.

At first it was a little intense, but when I was done, I felt strangely revitalized, almost high.

I would highly recommend a cold shower, in small doses, that is.

I saw this thread and I immediately broke down seeing all of my son's enthusiastic posts and reading the dates that he posted them: up to five days before he died. I saw us sitting on the patio discussing his new-found passion for cold showers and jumping off the cliffs by his house night and day. He was so full of life and his enthusiasm was a beautiful thing. He made fun of me in a good-natured way for being too much of a sissy to try it (the showers) and we laughed and I promised I would jump into the ocean with him soon.

I hope that this isn't an inappropriate way to use the thread and you can delete it if is with no bruised feelings on my part. I am putting in a picture of him for those who knew him here.

:) that is not inappropriate at all, herbavore... it's a beautiful memory

sending e-hugs your way

This definitely can improve your mood if done correctly.

I've also noticed that the longer that you remain consistent with your cold showers, the more your body adjusts and the less of a shock it is.

Pretty cool bruh

Ok...so, I went for a run outside a few hours ago and immediately hopped in the shower with it being cold to slightly warm. It felt great, but afterwards, I had the sensation that I had to urinate even though I really didn't have to. Does this mean I put my body through too much shock? The sensation subsided after 10-15 min. Heart rate, pulse, etc. all felt normal throughout and after shower.

Finally tried this out, started singing Lou Christie's lightning's striking at the top of my lungs. It felt really good!

Just figured I'd give an update on the not-washing-my-hair-bit... After about a month and a half, maybe two months, I had to forgo the experiment and wash my hair. I didn't realize just how greasy it had gotten, and the people I'm around every day aren't the people who would tell me my hair looked like Crisco--Finally got pulled aside by an instructor who told me she hopes I don't take offense, but that my hair looked a heck of a lot better at the start of this semester / at the end of last semester than it did currently, and that I should go back to doing whatever it was around those times. Oh well--The experiment was worth it. :)

As far as taking cold showers... I still can't do that. Especially not in the winter. :P

^you should re-read about your dosha, missy veta.

my hair fries out in an instant, and after all this time i found that what works best is johnson & johnson baby shampoo, or Emerald Forest brand which is probably due to the ingredients plus the Sapayal. and far less conditioner, like never.

cold showers were great for opiate w/d.
but that was it.!

no mas / no mas

I love finishing a shower with some cold water. It invigorates me like nothing else. I also always rinse the conditioner out of my hair with cool to cold water. It helps to smooth the hair cuticle and I swear my hair looks a billion times more shiny each time I do it. :)

This thread piqued my interest yesterday, so I tried it out yesterday after working out and this morning before work. Hot shower like normal, then ice cold for as long as I could stand. It sure wakes you up!

Yeah I'm into doing the hot first and then the last minute or so being ice cold. I like steam to open up my pores and whatnot, then cool to refresh me. Its especially effective after working out.

You need to have a full cold shower or else you don't win the prize! Going hot then cold for a minute is like cycling a marathon then sprinting the last 100yds and expecting gold medals!

NO GOLD MEDALS FOR THE HOT SHOWERERERERS ok?

It's not far off a year since I started cold showering and stopped using shampoo. Have used shampoo a total of once......maybe twice in nearly 12 months. My hair has never looked so thick, health, vibrant and of utmost sheen. No grease. No geese. Just ducks and oranges, baby.

Winter is difficult to coldshower in, i'll admit. Very fucking difficult. Just gotta keep on keepin' on, brah.

Cycling between hot and cold is actually what gives some of the healthy benefits.

Yep, so the story goes.
However, perhaps I should have specified.....the main reason I have cold showers are for anxiety/depression. The gold medal is for the D-Pressed Kru.
Having a half-assed "cold/hot/cold/hot" shower doesn't give me nearly the same amount of benefit, simply for it isn't nearly as challenging. There is a distinct difference in the anxiety-reducing effect of cold hydrotherapy when one has a full-on cold shower compared to half and half, but of course your experience may differ. I would strongly suggest going for a full on cold shower for maximum benefit (adhere to how we evolved/reap the reward - we didn't evolve with, but that's just me.

2) Alternating between hot and cold gives some of the healthy benefits according to a website called "the art of manliness". This is debated, and I have seen evidence for the contrary. But then, I have also seen credible suggestion that this notion is indeed accurate. It's thus far unknown what is truly better for us as unfortunately there isn't a heck of a lot of research into something this simple and unprofitable.

But yeah. I know people who swear by alternating for their health gain (relieving arthritis for example, in an older gentleman) but I personally strongly believe in full on cold shower for the maximum benefit as after about a year of practicing this, is what I feel works best for me and I trust my body :)
