I've noticed that codeine constipation seems (To me) be worse then heroin constipation.

Does anyone know why this would be?

Could it be to do with the fact that when I'm taking codeine it's in powder form orally, where as when I'm taking it H it's smoked? :\

No it's more to do with the fact that all of the morphine based drugs have the same intestinal anti motility effect, but the amount of codeine you'll be using is a hell of a lot more than the amount of heroin, so instant get-lock

I think the distribution would have an effect.. When you eat it, the highest concentration is going to be around you gut. You're going to get concentrations where the codeine can directly effect opioid receptors.... While when you smoke heroin, it goes to your lungs, and then the blood is going to go rapidly to your head.

But either way its getting into your bloodstream, and that's when the intestinal motility will be impaired. Maybe i'm wrong, but i don't believe codeine or any other opiates can make you constipated without getting into your bloodstream first. I would guess that since you're probly taking upwards of 60-90mgs of codeine, that it has to do with the quantity, because i doubt you're taking more H than codeine ;-) correct me if im wrong someone?

I was taking 450mg of codeine at a time. God knows how much diamorphine I was taking.
2 fiver wraps (UK), work that out if you know roughly! :\

when I was on methadone I took combination stool softener/laxative pills and they did the trick like magic. I almost gave myself hemmroids straining on the pot all day before I found those lifesaver pills. DEFINITLY go for something with stool softener + laxative ~ if you go for laxative alone you could very well tear a hole in your ass and walk crooked for a week.

As a stool softener, you don't need drugs, just drink plenty of fluids eaxh day as the shit hardens due to removal of water in the colon - if you're well hydrated, that process is less active (grapefruit juice works great and kills two birds with one stone; and it's full of vitamin C!)

No, codeine could directly effect intestinal motility as it passes down your alimentary canal.

Loperamide HCl (And Diphenoxylate) both have significant anti-motility action without being able to be absorbed into the blood stream. (diphenoxylate is slightly soluable in blood/water, while loperamide is not).

I've read that it is not safe to take stool-softeners on a long-term basis (over a week or 2), due to their detergent-like chemical make-up and irritating action on the large intestine...they can permanently affect the function of the bowel...

Instead one could take a large amount of supplimental FIBER (which is the NATURAL way of softening stool), and some magnesium as a nutritional suppliment (to shift the calcium/magnesium balance slightly in favor of magnesium to speed things up)...

Failing that, there are 2 drugs which are safe for longer-term usage, 1 being Polyethylene Glycol powder (which gets my personal recommendation).

And the other is Methyl-Naltrexone, which is essentially the opioid antagonist version of loperamide. This is supposed to be coming on the american drug market this year.

Both of these are prescription-only medications, but the natural approach should be sufficient for nearly everybody who does not have a pre-existing intestinal condition (50 grams of fiber a day will make almost ANYBODY regular, but it takes a couple days to really pay off).

I find that Codeine has minimal consipating effects (however I don't use high doses as I find it non-recreational) but a good dose of oral Oxy constipates me more than IV H. I think it definitely has something to do with route of administration. Going through the digestive tract it will have greater (direct) access to the intestinal opiate receptors.
