I'm really sorry to hear that @scarecrow1339 This is life and we all need to atone for our mistakes somehow. I don't think the place to atone for our mistakes is in the context of having surgery a performed. I've had a lot of surgery throughout my life, so I'm somewhat desensitized. I can understand how others would see surgery as a scary experience.
We all deserve the same level of respect as others getting medical treatment. For Christ's sake, the United States is ~60% clinically obese (probably more, as this statistic is a decade old). We have all of these medicines to treat people who get fat due to lack of self-control regarding food. Those people aren't treated like trash, they're treated like everyone else despite the fact that they are literally killing themselves daily with their addictions to food. Just something to think about.
Also, keep in mind, physicians also get addicted to drugs. The difference is, when they get addicted, they get to go through "closed door" treatment for their issues, likely get to keep their license and get to keep their reputation as if nothing ever happened. Meanwhile, every single mistake and relapse is noted in our medical chart for all staff to gawk at and make judgments upon. Just don't let these assholes convince you that they're better than you.
The fact that they have taken the Hippocratic Oath and continue to treat addicts as less-than clearly illustrates what type of person you are dealing with and whether they're worthy of your respect. It's just like what your Mom tells you about bullies at school; they put people down because they have insecurities of their own.
