Codeine and CWE Megathread - The long awaited!

I really don't like the codeine itch come to think of it, feels like an allergic reaction, as mr blonde said, and distracts me from the high. Has nothing on a good oxy itch ;)

I used to hate the opiate itch with a passion but I don't mind it now. Overall I would say codeine is on the excessive itching side out of all the opiates/opioids I have tried, but I still often dose it without even taking an antihistamine and its easily bearable to me. I tend to get a mild itch that persists most of the next day as well.

Mr Blonde I definately felt like I got better effects when using mylanta than zantac, so cheers for that. Unfortunately it didn't make quite as much difference as I hoped it might but it was still nice to get a bit more fucked up none the less. :)

Yeah its definitely distracting. At first I like it because it just adds to the come on of the opioid effect. Then it becomes distracting and all I think about.

Dont get itchy very often these days though anyway.

Mr Blonde, I do suffer from hayfever and occasionally take something (usually Telfast) to relieve it. But I avoid Telfast on days that I'm likely to use codeine and I haven't changed any other meds recently. That's why I was so surprised by the reaction. The only things I could come up with were: 1) allergic reaction to some material in the tablets or 2)a reaction to something I had eaten during the day.

In any case, I hope it was a one-off.

^ It's good to get your hands on drugs, but she may regret her decision later if she needs pain relief and she handed it all over to you.

Lets not discuss it too much as it is off topic from the thread though... I was about to unapprove so if another mod wants to go ahead.

Which brand of tablet do you use? Inactive ingredients have to be disclosed in the Consumer Medicine Information document and by comparing the older CMI with the newer one I can check to see if they have changed it up.

If you ate something unusual for you during the day as well it may have also contributed to the severity of the reaction, as non-anaphylactic reactions to food and especially skin reactions can take some time to appear after ingestion of the substance. Some individuals even show a delayed response to some of the cytokine activating properties of codeine, as was shown in this study.

Thanks Mr Blonde. Unfortunately, I threw the box away so I can't say exactly what was in the CMI document or what type of generic it was. I'll have to check next time I come across those particular tablets. And I can't even remember what I ate on the day... I guess it just goes to show that you can never predict with absolute certainty what is going to happen when you take something - even things you've had many times before.

Interesting link, also. I had never heard of meperidine - that would be perscribed for people who suffer severe histamine reactions from codeine, I guess?

^ If you let me know what brand they are I can check the CMI's. :)

Also, meperidine is also known as pethidine and is a strong opioid analgesic that you would mainly see used in hospitals. Not that common in Australia.

Bump!

There is going to be a new generic of Panadeine Extra in Australia called Mydol 15... and it will be available in 40 packs. They are getting around the new codeine laws by pointing out that the law specifies that a packet of 40 can have a maximum of only 12mg of codeine, not codeine phosphate. If you remove the phosphate then you are under the 12mg and you've got a cheaper, bigger version of Panadeine Extra soon to be on the shelf. :)

I get the gestapo treatment from chemists as it is buying panafen+, not sure how I'd do with panadeine extra, even a generic.

^ I've seen people get letters from their doctors recommending that they use these codeine/ibu/apap products for pain relief in order to satisfy the pharmacist. Also, find pharmacies where they are a bit more lax about it and dress for the occasion I guess.

I dress and shave like a respectable person for sure if Im going to a pharmacy. Just so I feel more comfortable. Other times I just think fuck it (like today) and just wear boardies. Although I had shaved for work and I look respectable.

Im excited about the prospect of these new pan extras. I buy a lot of my panadeine extras online from various pharmacies so hopefully they all get stock.

So WTF is the difference between codeine and cod phosphate? I thought it was the same thing.

Well they've never actually gone so far as to refuse me, but there are a few specific stores that will grill me every time, especially if I drop in more than once a month. As you said being well dressed helps, and I make sure I'm clean shaven/not obviously intoxicated. I think they just interrogate me on general principle, being a young guy buying painkillers.

Though the flip side is that a few of the stores down the road I've been hitting up just wave me through with a 'you know what to do.'

Codeine phosphate is just the salt form of codeine; if you just said 'codeine' in a scientific context, or in this context, it is talking about the freebase. Because the SUSMP didn't specify whether it was codeine freebase or codeine phosphate, this is how Mydol's manufacturers are getting around the law.

Surely this will last 6 months max...

Yeah I thought phosphate just meant 'salt'.

I hope it lasts longer then that. I mean really, community pharmacies are scraping by right now as it is... if they crack down even harder on codeine I think it will put them in an even more dire position as it is.

I thought I'd add a brief outline on how I may perform a CWE. I usually get the panadine xtra 15mg codeine and some of the chemist own 10mg codeine grind into a find powder using a mortar. Paracetamol is soluable approx 1.4 g to 100ml H2O at 20 degrees c. I recomend a two step filtration technique as outlined in the original post by Mr Blonde. Once my CWE is cooled in fridge I filter through some gauze. Once the first filtration is complete I use good quality lab paper to perform the second filtration after cooling the CWE again. I usually take 25-50 mg phenergan before dosing on the CWE for the "itch factor". Occasionally I may evaporate the CWE in a evaporating basin and consume but the binders play havoc with this and I can never be bothered to go to the lengthy steps needed to remove them. I do this (CWE) only because I have some very bad neck/shoulder and back pain, I wont go into details.
