cocaine in the plant?

if kerosine can draw cocaine out of the coca plant, and acetone can remove unwanted crap like atropine and resperine, etc. why do processes in south america not simply go like this:

kerosine soak, dry out result

add acetone, then filter and dry

add hydrochloric acid.

this method seems far more efficient and uses less time (less steps)

surely this works well in theory?:D

Kerosine (= petroleum = mixture of alkane boiling at ca. 150-300 °C) and acetone are 1. miscible and 2. do both extract cocaine from plant material.

I'm not aware of any atropin in coca, so I don't the point completely here...

If cocaine is insoluble in acetone then how can acetone be used to directly extract it? from what i was aware there are other psychoactive alkaloids in coca that can have shitty effects on the high

wikipedia "including methylecgonine cinnamate, benzoylecgonine, truxilline, hydroxytropacocaine, tropacocaine, ecgonine, cuscohygrine, dihydrocuscohygrine, nicotine and hygrine"

my point was if kerosine can do the extract, which would then be dried out leaving a coca extract residue, surely acetone could be used to "clean" this extract then drop HCl to make it the salt. voila reduced steps increased efficiency.

what are the flaws (there must be a reason the manufacturers dont do this as although my chemistry ain't great this seems like an obvious idea)

Ah OK, now I got the point...

I'm only guessing here but I think acetone is too expensive...maybe...

Potassium permanganate is combined with water. This mixture is added to the coca paste and acid solution. Potassium permanganate is used in this step to extract other alkaloids and material that are undesired in the final product. In particular, potassium permanganate is used to break down the alkaloid ciscinnamoylcocaine which is found in large concentrations in E. Novogranatense varieties. If the coca paste has a high concentration of this alkaloid and potassium permanganate is not used then crystallisation of cocaine HCl will be very difficult to achieve.
