A NEW energy drink that crashed parties in the US last week is called Cocaine, and its makers are billing it as "the legal alternative" to the drug.
The drink's maker maintains that "doing Cocaine", the beverage that is, gives a bigger and better high without the crash other energy drinks cause.

They say a high hits within five minutes, followed by a caffeine boost 15 minutes later. The ride lasts five hours and the concoction is "350 per cent stronger than Red Bull", they claim.

They argue the effect is part chemical - the drink uses "simple" sugars that don't need to be broken down by the body to create a sugar buzz, and a much larger dose of vitamin B12 - and part psychological.

"When a person sees the name of the drink, some psychological effect happens and the person is already experiencing the energy buzz before they even open the can," speculates Cocaine inventor Jamey Kirby, whose company, Redux Beverages, is based in Las Vegas.

"I can think of no other product except real cocaine that could have that effect on the public."

Taste-testers say the drink hits hard. "It does give you a little rush," one sipper said.

Another hated the feeling the drink gave her. "I don't like the tingly feeling in my chest. I feel my heart racing and I'm not being paranoid . . . I feel looped."

Kirby said an ingredient was added to slightly numb the throat to add an oral sensation much like cocaine does.

The company is marketing the drink to partygoers.

i wonder how many people are gonna try the drink while on cocaine and have their heart explode "what are all those popping noises?"

Those jerk's are trying ride cocaine's free marketing train. Not a bad idea, but I doubt it'll take off.

I'm sure that there will be people dying from drinking lots of this mixed with vodka and lots of dancing, fucking ridiculous:)

no, i doubt it pic. it is just sugar caffiene and b12. they would have to have serious heart concerns to fall over from that with vodka.

"I can think of no other product except real cocaine that could have that effect on the public."

fucking lame.

"Cocaine" isn't for sale in Chicago area stores just yet, but some local beverage purveyors say they won't stock it if it does become available.

The controversial energy drink recently debuted in New York and California.
The drink maker's Web site claims it will soon be available online via Amazon.com.

Several Chicago bars and clubs contacted over the weekend said they had no plans to stock the drink.

Tammy Tatos, owner of Gold Crown Liquors, 3425 N. Clark, said, "I wouldn't buy it. It doesn't sound good."

Marissa Arredondo, a manager of Sam's Wines and Spirits at 1720 N. Marcey, said the drink could upset some customers.

"We do have families come in and shop," she said. "They would be offended."

In addition to the provocative name, Cocaine promises an "instant rush" with "no crash." It contains more caffeine than a Starbucks Grande coffee, and nearly three times as much as the most popular energy drink, Red Bull.

Glamorizes addictive drug?

In some news accounts, officials with Redux Beverages in Las Vegas, which makes the drink, were quoted as saying Cocaine numbs the throat in order to produce an oral sensation like cocaine does. Company officials in Las Vegas couldn't be reached for comment.

Joseph A. Califano, president of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, said Redux "should be ashamed of creating and marketing an insidious product."

Noting that 1 million people use the drug cocaine weekly in the United States, he said in a statement, "Putting a product on the market that glamorizes an illegal and addictive drug like cocaine is irresponsible and reprehensible."

While the drink has only been available for a short time, the company claims its Web site, drink cocaine.com, received 6.7 million hits in its first week.

On the drink's MySpace profile, visitors wondered when the drink would be more widely available.

One person named Madeline asked when "is this coming to Chicago? Everybody at my school wants a can!"

What an amazing marketing technique.

If I ever make a product, no matter what it is, I'm calling it "Anal Slut Fisting."

way to kill the potential placebo effect

rashandreflex, I doubt many who would get placebo effect from this product would be reading this article. What this guy says in it won't make a difference in sales.

Oh no, it says COCAINE! Cocaine is EVIL! They're forcing this evil word upon us, we're gonna go to hell for it and we don't even get a choice!

Seriously tho, they gotta throw some ginseng in there. What's an energy drink without ginseng? Monster has a ridiculous amount and that stuff gets you tweaked like no other, while having less caffeine than alot of other drinks.

If you get tweaked off energy drinks, you obviously have not abused enough stimulants in your life.

Its funny how hypocritcal they are. They act if the world is against drugs, but you see how companies take advantage of our intoxicant nature by marketing energy drinks, prescription drugs and alcohol.

I feel glad that i choose ecstasy or weed over things like alcohol and smoking, because i may be breaking the law but at least my heart will still be beating and i will be alive.
