Coca-cola coca flavoring?

Great, now I can explain to my friend why he's more than just fixated on drinking massive amounts of this product..

Cocaine is taken out of the coca leaves by a pharmaceutical company who's name I can't remember, but they are the only legal importer of coca leaves in America. They sell the cocaine to various medical and pharmaceutical companies and then sell the de-cocained coca leaves to Coca-Cola.

It seems like even with an extractio, there could still be a TRACE amount of coke left in coca-cola, is it really possible to get 100% of every cocaine molecule out before coca cola inc. gets the leaf?

Is it feasible to compare the opium poppy to the coca leaf?

Say a company used opium-depleted poppy extracts in their drinks. Would the same situation exist such as the one with Coca-cola? Would it be different? How?

Personally I've never tried whole coca leaf (to my dismay), but from reading about it and the effects given by it, I can't help but think that Coca-cola's market force is somewhat borrowed by slight addictive properties hidden in their "formula".

Wow, this controversy has been lingering since as long as I can remember. To put all this simply, you will not, EVER find Cocaine in a can/bottle of Coca-Cola. Sad, but true. Perhaps there will be other alkaloids present, but Cocaine itself, no.
Yes, they use "spent" coca leaves, and use the remainder (alkaloids?) for flavouring agents. These agents added with caffeine and God-knows what-else they're throwing in the concoction, is of course going to add to flavour, addiction (for some). Sugar, Caffeine, Kola, and who knows what other ingredients is going to make for a rather unique concoction. Coca-cola company refuse to release their "secret ingredients".
Much like K(rusty)F(at)C(hicks).

I bet there are a few million molecules of cocain to be found in coca-cola.

I think the recipe is no so secret anymore,I have a copy of it which was published many years back.

Some guy from Rhodia was showing the use of phosphoric acid in softdrinks, and Coca-cola has a surprisingly low pH value. Thus even if cocaine does survive the extraction, its relatively likely that any traces will be hydrolyzed to inactives.

little off the topic... but..

columbia has recently started distributing a new kind of cocaine drink

this issue of maxim did an article on it

yes i read that it does have cocaine leaf extract in it, but remember that if you swallow cocaine, your very naughty liver breaks down MOST of a SMALL dose before it gets to your brain - the same for herion.

Not many coke heads 'eat' cocaine for a reason !

Any chance of uploading a copy? Might be an interesting read.

yeah, i never really understood the hooplah with eating the stuff.. it doesnt work long enough when it goes directly to the brain, let alone eating a bit of it.. whatever works for some people lol

i'll see what i can do about getting it uploaded... maxim doesn't have the article itself on their website for some reason

its true, i have some coca tea and can notice the flavor similarity it has with coca cola. that sweet kinda syrupy taste..

People have been drinking coca tea and chewing coca leaves in Peru and Bolivia for over a thousand years. The Incas thought of it as a sacrament and believed gods were involved. Does this sound like it does nothing? I chewed coca leaves today having just ordered a second batch from friendly Peru. I think this is the only safe use of cocaine. 100% natural, no chemicals or who knows what. No known deaths associated with this type of use. I won't chew 2 hours before sleeping because I will be kept up. Cocaine is dangerous and evil. Evo Morales a former coca farmer and later president of the coca growers union just got elected the first indigenous president of Bolivia. He ran on a platform of " Si coca, no cocaine". Coca is not cocaine. Those of you who need near deadly doses to get high are heading for the proverbial, everybody has seen it, fall. The only truly sustainable and enjoyable use is tea and chewing.

For every high with coke their is an equal or greater comedown. This is why people binge , to avoid comedown. Sounds like instant addiction. I have smoked base and the first hit is really something. Wam. But the second and rest are not as good and you become a shivering sweating mess. It is a result of prohibition that people are not given the choice of first trying coca tea or chewing. Nobody wants to take the chance of importing leaves when the penalties are the same as powder. Just like during prohibition you could not get a beer, just liquor. Moderation is truly the way to use any mind altering chemicals.

It's not a secret that Coca-Cola's flavoring comes from Coca leaves and Kola nut (hence the name Coca-Kola)

The only stimulant it contains is Caffeine. I think it's approx. 30mg/33cL bottle

Coca-Cola presently contains the stimulants caffeine, fructose (sucrose in europe), theobromine, and possibly theophylline. The kola nut (the seed of various species in the Cola genus) provides both the caffeine and the theobromine. I'm not sure how much theophylline it contains as I just learned of it tonight.

On an interesting relevant side-note, 7-Up contained lithium citrate until 1950.
