Which drug would you consider worse to take regularly, long term?

Clonazepam

Alcohol

Tetracycline (antibiotic)

Just interested in people's view points because I've been using all 3 regularly and I didn't even think of the antibiotic as bad until recently.

Alcohol in terms of internal organ damage. Keep in mind Alcohol & Clonazepam are both physically addicting. Alcohol is much worse than Clonazepam IMO. 8o

These are impossible to compare because the types of risks are so different. And it really depends on the frequency and dose of each. Alcohol is more damaging than clonazepam, but clonazepam is probably more addictive. Both alcohol and clonazepam can cause serious physical dependence. Tetracycline is not good for your health (aside from if you truly need it to treat a serious infection the benefit may outweigh the risks), check out this huge list of side effects here. (and I can think of a couple more that aren't even listed there). May I ask what you are taking it for and why you are taking it long-term (if you don't mind sharing)?

I took it for a year and a half for acne. Just stopped a little over a week ago because I was having stomach issues. Taking a probiotic now to replenish my gut flora.

Been reading about people getting horrible conditions like Chron's Disease and Chronic Fatigue from prolonged Tetracycline use. I feel sick that I took it for so long. I want to be able to be there for my family. Going a little crazy now, maybe a little paranoid.

Try not to worry too much about something you can't predict! You could just as easily be one of the many people who have no lasting problems from it. I'm glad you're off it now and taking a probiotic. Hopefully it's a good quality one and in a high enough dose?

Really anyone on antibiotics should take probiotics. I don't know how many times I've had a friend taking antibiotics and complaining about major digestive system issues and I tell them to take a probiotic supplement and they don't believe me or whatever and procrastinate on it, and when they finally take it as suggested they are like "Wow, my stomach feels way better" - why don't doctors inform people of these things!? 8)

Only other things I can really think of to do are to be really kind to your health for a while, like eat healthy, avoid drugs/alcohol (especially alcohol right now, since both tetracycline and alcohol are hard on the liver), make sure you get lots of sleep and exercise, and try to keep your stress at a minimum.

I know it's crazy the way doctors operate. Patient care is a business there's no human element to it anymore.

I'm taking a probiotic now. New Chapter All Flora. Supposed to have porbiotics good for antibiotic use and stomach issues too. The label says to take two pills once a day. But I'm thinking of maybe taking more to speed my recovery.

Any idea if New Chapter is a good company for probiotics?

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah I think that's a good one, I've used it before. I don't know if you really need to take extra, but I think it's very unlikely to do any harm (the only reason I don't say impossible is that it has inulin and apples in it, which some people might be sensitive to, but I'm sure they're just very small amounts). How are your stomach issues since stopping the tetracycline?

Stomach issue is still there, maybe a bit better. I've changed my diet though. Avoiding foods which I think make it worse. I just hope this isn't a permanent condition or the start of something worse.

Alcohol is certainly the most toxic out of those substances. I would advise you to stay away from it as it can cause a number of issues to the GI tract, including but certainly not limited to damage to the mucosal lining in the stomach, and also decreasing the absorption of nutrients in the intestines.

When I was 16-19 years old I too used to suffer from Acne, I tried pretty much all treatments available, various creams (Benzomycin etc..) Various antibiotics (Vibramycin, Tetracyclin etc..) And then finally Roaccutane (Isotretinoin) which was by far the most successful of them all but unfortunately came with a nasty bunch of side-effects, during treatment I suffered with many stomach issues but due to the large number of varying treatments I feel unable to pinpoint the exact cause.. Needeless to say I still suffer with stomach issues some 15 years later, albeit not so severe.

Just out of interest, how well did it treat your Acne? I found that Antibiotics worked quite well to begin with and then stopped working.
