Just a quick story on the topic of music and being off your nut...
Last night Raider and I had a funny experience. We'd had a few cones (ok so we were
mightily ripped) and were listening to a couple of CDs that a dear friend in the 'States sent us. They are old ('94ish) Jeff Mills releases called WaveForm Transmissions. At first, the CDs were playing in the background, then at some point we both all of a sudden realised (and said at the same time) that the beautiful multilayered minimalistic techno that we were hearing was actually the sounds of thought.
Sounds wierd I know, and I'm stretching now to remember it, but this is how the rationalisation for our idea went. When your brain is working in normal day to day mode, it is quite happy doing the thinking in conscious mode. The brain has the belief that it is in control and no outside influence can force it to think anything it doesn't want to. So, the CD music we were listening to would just sound like nice music. However, in a slightly altered state, we figured that the brain is much more receptive to outside influence, and therefore the techno is much more than just music, but more like a catalyst that allows the brain to revive old memories thought long buried, and create new ones for the future.
Like a couple of little chatterboxes we sat there gabbling away talking about things that neither of us have spoken of for literally years, and Raider actually said "I didn't even know that I
knew some of this stuff... it really is true that you remember everything you see and hear". Which was pretty spot on at the time. The music entranced us to the point where the changes in music rhythm and melody actually took us into new topics of conversation (which over a 4 hour period covered quite some ground, I must admit I'm a little amazed myself).
Funny eh?
