Tell me there's a plethora of you out there who haven't forgotten the great Disney cartoons of the past? I'm pretty serious about the classic part... I don't want to see anything like "Goof Troop" in here. So yeah, lets reminisce the "good old days" of animated cartoons.

Mickey's Trailer (1938)

Probably my favorite Disney short. It's well-crafted, funny and portrays all the characters in their prime.

The Whale Who Wanted To Sing At the Met (1946)

allanmake00.jpg

Found in the collaborative film "Make Mine Music," Willie the Whale is the most heart-warming Disney character I can think of. To jog some of your memories, it's about a Sperm Whale with incredible musical talent and his dreams of singing Grand Opera. But short-sighted impressario, Tetti-Tatti, believes that the whale has simply swallowed an opera singer, and chases him with a harpoon.

Peter and the Wolf (1946)

Also on the "Make Mine Music" movie was this short, which is essentially the same story as Prokofiev's. I don't think it was well-received but I really enjoyed it.

I'm Blue For You (Boo-Boo-Boo-Boo) (1962)

Symposium%2B2.jpg

I'm not sure if you'd call this a short or what but it was on "A Symposium on Popular Songs." It was basically just some really ragged animation set to Skip Ferrell's song "I'm Blue For You (Boo-Boo-Boo-Boo)". I think what was so funny was the female screams that they put in every time Ferrell sang "boo-boo-boo-boo". My sister and I still sing it when we're together.

Clock Cleaners (1937)

This film follows the three greats on their various issues with the stubborn clock.

Mickey and the Beanstalk (1947)

Apparently this was in the film "Fun and Fancy Free" (adorable title). Obviously, Mickey plays the role of "Jack" and finds himself (along with Donald and Goofy) in a lot of trouble.

I also had the book

Chicken Little (1943)

I know this is a parable for Nazi philosophy but I still love this short... though it may be disturbing.

I have more but I'll leave "The Three Caballeros" to atlas....

I LOOOOVE all of those you posted Amy! =D my god.....memories.......i love old cartoons <3 Me and my sister used to watch Chicken Little over and over again lol....as well as Mickey and the Beanstalk and Peter and the Wolf.

Some of my faves:

I love silly symphonies!
Three Little Pigs (1933)
ss-3pigs.jpg

I can still sing the song the pigs sing before the house gets huffed and puffed away....and can copy their laughs!

Flowers and Trees (1932)
ss-trees.jpg

An idyllic dance of flora until a wretched old tree stump tries to cut in the dance. Rebuffed, he proceeds to set the woods on fire!

Goofy and Wilbur (1939)
g-wilbur.jpg

Another favorite! Goofy goes fishing with his best friend, Wilbur, a grasshopper.

Dumbo (1941)

I just had to put this here because Dumbo has a special place in my heart, it still makes me CRY & laugh everytime I watch it.

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)
d-icahbodandmrtoad.jpg

ichabod.jpg

These two back-to-back shorts ( The Wind in the Willow &
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow ) used to terrify me and I absolutely loved it.

and last but not least.....
Ferdinand the Bull!!!! (1938 )
fer.jpg

Ferdinand is a quiet, peaceful young bull who only wants to stop and smell the flowers. But, when he is stung by a bee, the townspeople believe he is ferocious and take him to the bullfight ring.--> I love Ferdinand...my family used to tease me and say it was really me in the cartoon (cos i'm a taurus and quite lazy..):o

thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I don't know how Goofy transitioned to a really good clumsy everyman, but he's been my favorite for a while now: mostly because I like cartoons with authoritative narration(which also explains my abiding love of Tex Avery cartoons).

The Three Caballeros

This is the one that got me going on this thing today. I stumbled across a clip on youtube and was reminded of how much I enjoyed it as a child. I had no recollection, however, of how fantastic the animation and the direction was. Disney really used to put their all into everything they did. They make warner brothers look as slap-dash and half-assed as Hannah Barbara.

There's an air of *something* that doesn't quite rise to the level of racism in it. It was pretty much the norm to think of Latin America as a paradise for Anglos. Its still better, imo, than the way Warner portrayed Mexico in the Speedy Gonzales cartoons. I am completely comfortable with this being the first thing a child sees that has anything to do with Latin American culture... mostly because the music kicks ass. ;)

I just now read that The Three Caballeros and Saludos Amigos were made to open up latin markets since, because Donald Doesn't like Nazis, Disney was bared from distribution in occupied Europe. Neat, huh?

An American Tail - while it isn't a Disney movie, it's still a great film with very nice animation. It's about mice who immigrate to America to escape persecution and poverty in their home country. I think the mice are supposed to represent Jewish immigrants escaping from religious persecution.

i was more of a looney tunes and merry melodies kid.

Can we expand this thread to include other classic animation (perhaps give it a 50 year limit?) - Fleischer Brothers (Betty Boop & Popeye, etc), Tom & Jerry, Tex Avery (probably my all-time favourite - anyone else into Screwy Squirrel?), etc., etc?

Sure! Though we'll all secretly know they're inferior throughout discusison. ;) I kid. Yeah, Classic Cartoons, come one come all!

Frankly, I could never get into Disney stuff (though I still have a soft spot for The Jungle Book). Give me classic looney tunes any day.
