I recently got a pretty bad cut, which has developed into a slight infection. A couple months back I got clarithromycin for bronchitis. After doing some reading I found that it works well for skin infections.

I am currently taking suboxone, and when I looked up the interactions between the two drugs, it said there is a moderate interaction. I've read about CYP450 inhibitors in the past, but never heard of this one. I tried to do some searches about how strongly affects the enzymes, but the results were mixed. From what I understand there are three levels of inhibitors; strong inhibitors (more than 80% decrease in clearance), moderate inhibitors (50-80% decrease), and weak inhibitors (20-50% decrease).

Does anyone know what level clarithromycin inhibits CYP450?

Thanks all!

yeah, but its not that bad right now. I'm taking it more as a preventative type of thing. The skin is just a little swollen and red, so I'm just making sure. Plus, I still have a little bronchitis, so I figure it'll help with that too.

If you still have "a little bronchitis" months later you should not go throwing random amounts of antibiotics at yourself. Not properly completing a course of antibiotics can be potentially fatal as bacteria grow resistant to the drugs if they are not all killed off at first.

I know this is not what you're asking about in the topic, but you should really go see a doctor if your bronchitis hasn't cleared up yet.

Thanks that's good to know. the prescription was for bronchitis, so I didn't see a problem in it. On some medical websites, it said it was also the same dose as the ones given for topical infections. But that's a good idea, I'll try to get into the doctor as soon as my coverage is available again.
Part of the reason I was doing this is because I'm in college and don't have a lot of money.

Does anyone know about the enzyme inhibitor level of clarithromycin? I understand the dangers and stuff surrounding this, so I would appreciate no further responses that are off topic.
thanks.

If you have some left is that because you did not take the full course for your bronchitis? If that is so you are one of those we have to blame for drug resistant strains of illnesses. And you could have given yourself a drug resistant strain of bronchitis... why on earth wouldn't you take the whole course?
