Harm Reduction cipralex/lexapro (citalopram ssri antidepressant) and dxm question

I'm aware that lexapro/cipralex(Along with most other ssri medications) when combined with dxm can cause a heightened risk of serotonin syndrome.

Here's my question.

I have today aquire my medicine; cipralex (lexapro for usa). Will be used to treat my depression and anxiety.
It is prescribed as 10mg per day. On the 1st of July I would like to drop some dxm (500-600mg) but I'm not sure how to go about it on this medicine.
I was thinking of just taking 5mg daily untill Monday and then skip my dose for Tuesday (dxm day) or does this still pose a risk?

Since I will only just be starting g the medicine, I don't know if it will have had the time needed to build up to the point of effect that would cause serotonin syndrome.

I would like some input :) I've searched a bunch of topics but haven't found much geared to this specific situation. Thanks.
 
Believe it or not, your local pharmacist would be happy to answer these questions.

I am not a pharmacist, however in the 10 seconds it took me to do a google search, I found 100 articles with the information you need.

So I guess, UTFSE is the best advice here.

Would you mind telling g me exactly what you typed to get 100 articles regarding g my specific scenario?
I did do a search both on and off BL. I only seemed to get results of people who have been on cipralex for a long time, examples of people saying it's fine to combine them and others saying it's not. It seems many people have been able to do this with no complications but I wanted to ask in hopes that someone with some knowledge may be able to help me.

Oh yeah you're local pharmacist loves these kinds of questions. Don't be a dick, man.

I wouldn't cut you're anti-depressant in half for multiple days, I think if you went 36- 48 hours without it that would be better.

I don't really advise this, but if you do, are you sure you need OVER half a gram? That's a lot.

If you could get hold of a serotonin antagonist(IE cyproheptadine) you'd be better off.

Just be careful, serotonin toxicity FUCKING SUCKS.
 
I wouldn't risk it if I were you... serotonin syndrome is so terrible and you'll be pissed at yourself for being reckless. I once endured a 4th plateau DXM trip after taking a 5 day brake from my sertraline (zoloft) regimen. I had to be hospitalized because I was blacking out every hour from high blood pressure. Please don't risk it... it's definitely not worth it!
 
Yeah, I think it's a bad idea, but you can minimize the risks.

This is a good time to have a sitter, take a couple days off citalopram, get serotonin antagonists, etc.

Keep in mind you also run the risk of SSRI WD if you take too much time off of the (es)citalopram.

Well the things g is the key factor is that I've only been on it for 2 days. I hadn't got much of an answer so I went ahead with taking 5mg for the first two days then I'm gonna skip one while I drop the dxm tomorow.

I'll likely not take as much as I'd thought just to test the waters and see if I have any adverse reaction. I can always take more but not less.

Also if I hadn't specified, this is kinda like my personal treat/goodbye for dxm. I know it's not somthing I should play with while on this medication so this is it for a while.

Just as an update; I went through as planned. Dropped about 150mg to start, seemingly no effect after an hour so I dropped the rest (between 300-400mg). I turned out fine, no serotonin syndrome. .. but I felt zero/reduced effects from the dxm. Normally that's at least a high 2nd plateu for me, sometimes 3rd. I had a few beers and I seemed to feel that more than anything. I've had dxm and alcohol before so I don't think there's any reason that would cover up the effects.
Oh well.

Untill further notice I've continued my escitalopram dosage as per normal dosage to try to manage my anxiety/depression.
